Women - Why are you afraid to Lift Weights?

I know I should be more patient at people asking me for advice but I sometimes just lose it when I get women telling me they dont like working with weights at the gym as theyre afraid they would get ‘BIG’.

Oh come on la.. look at all those skinny rat-lookalike guys who have been at the gym for years huffing and puffing and grunting with those weights.. do they even look like they gained ANY muscle at all? So what would make you think that its easy in the first place?

It just won’t happen!
*a poll conducted on www.bodybuilding.com

Many women believe lifting weights will make them explode with bulging muscles and believe they cannot lift anything heavier than their makeup case.

The professional female bodybuilders that, until recently graced the pages of muscle magazines gained their extreme muscle mass with the aid of supplemental anabolic/androgenic steroids which are ILLEGAL. Women do not have the genetic capability to develop large, bulky muscles!

In fact, lifting heavy weights is the best way for a woman to reshape her body and look trim and fit!

Women who lift weights WILL gain some extra muscle, but its muscle that will only accentuate their feminine looks.

Think of it as a great way to look more toned and trim without losing an ounce. In fact, once you start, you may even notice that you’ve put on a few pounds, but don’t panic: You’re gaining muscle, which weighs more than the fat you’re losing. But since muscle is more dense than fat, it takes up less space, helping you fit into your clothes better. And if you lift regularly, you’ll eventually start dropping pounds.

You don’t have to spend a lot of time pumping iron to get the benefits. Two or three times a week on nonconsecutive days for about 30 minutes per session should do the trick.

Happy pumping ladies! Pumping iron, that is… ;)

You have to understand that most adult women these days are influenced by rippled, muscle-bound, man-like female bodybuilder of yesteryear when they think of lifting weight. Who wants to look like that when they want to fit into size 0 of MNG pants?

And look at the weight section of any gym - big-muscled men grunting and huffing and puffing - not exactly a women-friendly section innit? (heck, the free weight area is intimidating to me as well)

Exactly.. I wish I could change that mindset where they think that they can grow muscles that easily… let alone grow that much muscles IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Now how do I do that when I myself have personally heard idiotic Fitness First personal trainers advising female members that weights are FOR THE MEN and that its for growing BIG so the women should stick to light weights if they want to ‘tone up’? Sigh.. im starting to lose it with some of these FF trainers… gonna give them a piece of my mind one of these days.

Whenever I talk about doing weights, my friends cringe!!

It’s ridiculous, esp since when u see celebrities looking lean and toned after doing weight training -not big and bulky

I dont mind going for gym, but seems like none of my friends want to go with me :(. That stops me from going too.

Yeah.. so you see, weight lifting/resistance training IS the way to look good. No reason to be afraid. Now how do we convince everyone out there? Sigh..

emotionalistic:
I guess for women, they need company. But for me personally - time spent alone in the gym is usually more productive. No distractions/unecessary conversations, and I get to focus 100% on my workout. :)

Try attending classes la… at least that wont be so boring.

another reason I don’t like lifting weights is the heavy-breathing, grunting men sharing a space with me.
