Personal Trainer or Personal Time Waster?
by Noel Chelliah on Thursday, Nov 17, 2005
Went to take a shower, and noticed this personal trainer with one of his clients (I’m guessing its the complimentary session every new member gets, and not the paid one). Relaxing by the corner.. hmm..hey shouldnt you be helping her work out?

Maybe she’s tired. Or maybe they’re having some sorta mental exercise. Beats me…
Lousy Personal Trainers. Sigh.. it’s sad how a rotten few can tarnish the image of the entire lot. I’ve talked about them before, and I’ll talk about them again.
Except for a select few of their trainers (I’m sorry I don’t know their names too), I would boldly say that the rest of them are crap. They resemble boys who have just discovered fitness AND hitting puberty at the same time.

YuP..if u guyz notized day FF Leisure Mall all oso de suckz…some trainer fat like “……” er…hard 2 say it….stil 1 2 encourge ppl 2 weight loss or etc….Unbelieveable, nowdayz trainer r fat,no body shape at all….i oso duno why FF can hire a lot of trainer like datz……
yeah kk_kkkk,i noticed it too..kind of a sad case eh but i guess they have their reasons.i’ve spoken to some of them and they turn out to be really friendly, and professional as well..guess d term “practice what you preach” falls in but in my opinion, they’re trainers and their primary job and paid for is to show results to their clients, not themselves..which i hope happens cuz i dont think they’ll stick around if they have no clients when u all claim that they suck~!i guess d comment is very biased as what ur saying will affect the trainers and its careers and clubs.they might be fat but i bet they’re much fitter than u eh?haha..my guess~!!reason y im standing behind d trainers this time..cuz they’re my friends and i know why r they so..yeah im mite be biased but at least i got my facts.
kuay teow: In my opinion, being friendly and professional is only 10% of the equation of being a successful personal trainer. And an excuse like ‘they’re being paid to show results for their clients, and not themselves’ is the MAIN REASON WHY THE PERSONAL TRAINING PROFESSION TODAY IN MALAYSIA is pathetically EMBARRASSING when compared to international standards. Also, I’m 99.9% sure you’re one of them.. hiding behind an email address like “i_live_somewhere@hotmail.com” only confirms it. FYI, I don’t hate personal trainers, and I do know an excellent bunch of them. I’ve even recommended certain friends to trainers at FF who have then proceeded to sign up under them. I don’t hit out at personal trainers for no reason, and I’ve explained my stand on why and what I believe personal training should be. It’s an attitude like yours, and a lousy few who give a bad impression to everyone, and fail to raise the bar of the personal training profession.
glad to say tt e gym tt i go to does not have problems lik tt. sure.. some do slack ard n sit abt but only when there’s NO pt sessions in progress. other times, even when e trainers or instructors r free, they roam e floor n provide guidance to e gym-goers.. Hi, i just recently joined fitness first. I had to visit them cuz I forked out RM30 for some bloody promotion vouchers that ProDirect was pushing and the validation date ends on the 30th of Dec. I knew they were going to come up with comments telling me how out of shape i am and telling me i was beyond the desirable fat % range.. They all do. Slimming centres, facial centres..they always tell people why they should apply by saying how bad we look. I regretted terribly cuz I asked my sis to sign with her credit card. Now I heard that it is difficult to cancel the membership once you are in…help..i signed for 12 months and RM175 per month. I feel cheated. I heard people pay lesser than that. I am kinda shy as well to go for gym as I am constantly self-conscious. To add to that, I have no gym equipment experience what-so-ever. I only dance to fitness dvd at home. I am so worried sick that ppl will look at me like sum kind of weirdo at the gym. I would like to join their classes but i am afraid that the ppl would laugh behind my back when i dance funnily. PLS reply ASAP. I really need sum encouragement!
Thanks..
fitnessfrrreak: There’s no reason to feel cheated for having signed up for a gym membership. I personally assure you that it is money well spent. The very first time I step into a gym – I too felt embarrassed, and lacked self confidence – I was afraid of what people would think of me because I was overweight + I had bodyfat at the ugliest places you could imagine.
The choice is yours – either be conquered by your fear of people, or use that fear to your advantage and make a deal with yourself to DO something about your physique/lifestyle.
I sent you an email earlier today – do write to me – I’d love to catch up with you.
God bless.
C’mon people…
If you think you don’t deserve a personal trainer and you know how to motivate yourself and so discipline, it would be better if you stop criticizing people. Instead, provide us with constructive arguments. Just in case if you need a reminder, read again The Trainer’s Creed.
If you think we’re lacking of qualified trainers, this is where you come into the picture where you train them, share your knowledge with them. This industry is still at its infancy, that’s the way I see it. The younger generation trainers need to be trained in order the gain experience. Definitely, you can’t expect the to be perfect trainer overnight. You tell me where on earth, can you meet such business that don’t have sales targets? If you running a business, would you want to see it go out of business? Can you find any human being living on earth keep themselves away from making a living? Talking about honesty, you can only find sincerity and honesty in yourself.
I am not a trainer or someone who involve directly in the fitness industry. I’ve been hiring personal trainer since January 2007 from two different gyms. So far, I have no problem with them although they’re young in their own industry. In fact, I’ve transformed tremendously over the years which I can now be proud of maintaining it. It is not about whether you get a good or bad trainer, it is a matter of ourselves how far do we put our effort, discipline and equipped ourselves with knowledge. Why must we rely so much on other people? Others (regardless of any job disciplines) can only provide us guidance and supports. For the betterment, one must push themselves as much as they able to. To be frank, I have zero knowledge about health & fitness and nutrition before I get to know gym. Both of my trainers (previous and current) approached me as they always do. I never consider getting one and did not have any goal, initially. But I think I should give a try although previously my physique wasn’t that bad though. After hiring a PT, I started to realize that I need to do something for myself which am think I shouldn’t rely 100% on other people or being spoon-feed by them. I started to read about health & fitness, weight training, muscles, nutrition through internet, subscribing magazines and buying books. I get to appreciate myself by grasping new knowledge. I also ask opinions and exchange knowledge, skills and ideas not just with my trainer but also others just to get different point of view before I could jump into any conclusion. We have to remember that we live with people of different school of thoughts. If you read books, you’ll find different authors with different theories/ approaches.
If any of the trainers is acting unethical or harassing their clients, it is the client responsibility to make complaints if he/she feels something goes wrong. You warned them first but if they’re still the same, you have the right to change your trainer or take further actions to their superior.
I don’t see any reasons why must we criticizing, pinpoint, find fault or put blame on others when you can open up your mouth and tell your trainer nicely to stop answer phone calls (heck! I’m sure your so-call-professional boss/manager or maybe yourself do answer their phones while in the board meetings), chatting with his colleagues or whatsoever. Sometimes those calls are from you to cancel or change your schedule/s. Why must you nagging like your children over simple things that you can solve it? Be professional client- not dogmatic. Don’t criticizing or complaint so much without giving solutions as it won’t solve any problems. Live with healthy minds by giving constructive arguments not criticizing others. Please read again The Trainer’s Creed just in case if you need a reminder. Don’t be so arrogant and think of yourself. There’s always be better people around you in your own field who might criticizing about you as bad too. So stop thinking that you’re so perfect. It’s is about YOU… ourselves!
I enjoy hiring PT as they could be your friends. Exercise/workouts are fun things to do after stressed out working whole day in the office. Personal Trainer could be your best companion at the gym if you get your attitude correctly. They’re human like you too, who need to earn a living like everyone else.
Why must issues like “Personal Trainer or Personal Time Waster?”, “Personal Training Sessions-Is It Worth My Money?”, “Becoming a Personal Trainer-What Is Expected From You”, “The Professional Personal Trainer-Answering a phone call during a session with a Client” to be raised? I think something must have happened. If not, you won’t raise such issue. We should discuss some constructive issues that everybody can benefit from healthy lifestyles. Not finding fault!
I’m sure everyone has heard of this quote: “SMALL MINDS DISCUSS PERSONS, BIG MINDS DISCUSS EVENTS, INTELLIGENT MINDS DISCUSS IDEAS”. till then Malaysians, think sensibly and grow up for God’s sake.
