Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Protein – Personal Review

by Noel Chelliah on Thursday, Nov 24, 2005

Optimum Nutrition's Whey ProteinMy whey protein powder of choice to meet my daily protein requirements. Optimum Nutrition‘s 100% Whey Protein Powder.

Why?
I have yet to come across any protein powders that are similarly priced and comes in huge containers of approx 80 servings each. It retails at GNC for around RM230, which you can 25% off with your member discount.

Also interesting to note that Bodybuilding.com not only awarded it Protein Powder of the Year, but also Supplement of the Year. 65,000 votes by fitness enthusiasts all around the world cant be wrong can they?

Nutritional Breakdown
At 120 calories per serving (when mixed with water), it basically contains:
Protein: 24g
Total Fat: 1g
Cholesterol: 30mg
Total Carbohydrates: 3g
Aminogen (a naturally derived, patented plant enzymethat helps the body naturally liberate free-form amino acids from food proteinand therefore enhances the body’s absorption process)

Flavours I’ve seen
Chocolate, Vanilla, Banana, and Strawberry

Flavours I’ve tried
Chocolate and Vanilla
The Chocolate tastes really good when mixed with water but the Vanilla falls a bit flat. If you’re really particular on taste, mix it with milk instead, and remember – thats extra calories.

How much do I consume and when?
After workouts only- 2 scoops mixed with water (yeah, thats 2 servings!)
One container easily lasts me for 2 months.

If you have been a long time Optimum user, you would also notice that they’ve recently made a slight change to the formula of 100% Whey Protein to make even better. The name has also changed to “100% Whey Gold Standard” – all still at the same price!

Whey protein
My whey is the right whey.

Protein Powder
Still plenty left.

Free scoop
Precise servings with their free scoop found inside

That’s RM2.875 per serving. Crap….. not cheap……

There was a company (Designer Protein) that said if the whey was heat-dried to form the powder, your body only absorbs 30% of the protein. They claim most manufacturers dry above 200 degress C. to use a process where the temperature doesn’t go above 100 degrees C or something like that. Would you know anything about this, or heard of Designer Protein (also makes “Ultimate Orange”)?

aw,

See http://www.designerwhey.com. Designer used to be my protein of choice a long time ago when I could get my supply directly from overseas. Its ridiculously expensive to buy in Malaysia until today. The one thing I’ll never forget about Designer though, is their amazing taste! I particularly love their Strawberry flavour.

High temperatures do denature/destroy the protein molecules in any protein supplement… thats why you should never mix your protein powder with hot water! From what I know.. most manufacturers ‘cold process’ the whey. In a competitive industry like this, Im quite confident that Optimum Nutrition would know best.

If you used to read muscle magazines a few years ago, you would notice that both Designer Protein AND Optimum NUtrition used to run ad campaigns that attacked eachother directly! So if you ever come across an ad that makes u question Optimum nutrition.. – its exactly what they want you to believe.

In my opinion, I would rate both Optimum and Designer whey equal. Its just that Optimum is much easier on my wallet. I’ve seen great results with both.
