Fitness First Personal Trainers need personal manners training

When ignorant fellow gym members sometimes dont realise that OTHERS too wish to use the equipment that they’re hogging, I guess that it can sometimes be forgiven as it was probably unintentional, or perhaps they’re new and dont realise that they can’t hog the machines!

But what do you do when a personal trainer himself behaves like a jerk in the gym?

Allow me to relate my experience:

Place: Fitness First, Menara John Hancock
Time: 7.20PM

- Member is hogging the ab machine
- I’m standing directly in front of him - with an annoyed look in my face
- I’m Waiting…
- Still waiting…
- Along comes personal jerk trainer with a client he’s trying to persuade to sign up for lessons under him
- Personal jerk trainer notices me and KNOWS that I’m waiting for the machine
- Member is finally done with the machine, gets up and walks away
- Personal jerk immediately grabs machine and goes on with lesson to his client, obviously not bothered that I was waiting for the machine.
- I’m still standing there - all eyes on Personal jerk.
- Personal jerk finally gathers courage to slowly turn and look at me with a smirk on his face
- Was very tempted to grab him by his collar and slam his head against the weight stack but decided not to. Instead, I grabbed my water bottle (which was next to the machine he was using) and walked away.

I mean.. come on - if you wanted to use it, at least have the courtesy to say so! Especially if you KNEW I was waiting for it. I’ve never been more annoyed in the gym before. Ever.

The only consolation I got from this incident was that the anger only helped me train harder for the sets after that. A pleasant side-effect indeed.

NOTE - Oct 22nd 2007 : I’d like to add that this was just a one time incident, and it happened to me. Over the past many months… nothing like this has happened again to me, or anyone else that I know of. :)

Damn it.. that’s the Malaysian Subdued Response, isn’t it? I was guilty of it myself - simply to walk away. After being in the US, I’ve learnt and would probably do this:

1) At the guy hogging the machine - just look him in the eyes and ask, “How long more you gonna be on this machine, dude? I need to finish off one set.”

2) At the trainer - “Hey, sorry I’ve been waiting a long time. Why don’t you show some other machine first.”

You don’t get pissed, and the other guy realizes he’s being a jerk.
good karma for everyone all around.

huh very annoying!

aw: True.. I could have done that.. but I must say.. I did enjoy the anger rush I experienced.. something your ordinary pre-workout drink wont give you. Heh heh. Thanks for the advice though. I’ll keep that in mind.

mihun: yeah.. wait till it happens to you. You’ll scream. :P

kuikuikui, it only happens to me when i work out on nite time. got few guys but they all friendly & helpful. i used to work out with my adopted sis aka my client too :D malu nak work out dgn guys lew :-p

so whenever those guys wanna use the machine, me & my sis will change our workout which we never gonna ever disturb them. as u said, imagine someone talking to u when u’re doing your bench press thingy. berak kapur weh!!! =)) ops! mind my words

I agree with aw. If it was me, I would have told the personal trainer off in front of his client in calm, sarcastic tones.

Fortunately for me, no such problems with trainers at my branch.

6 dailymuscle 01.13.06 at 12:23 pm

mihun: guys are always helpful to the women in the gym lar. Didnt you know? :P

scorkes: I’m pretty hot tempered. It get’s worse in the gym but I tend to leave it that way because it actually does help intensify my workouts. Channeling my anger to do something useful. Weird, I know.

Anyway, there was no way I could have been calm if I were to talk to him. I would have been rude, which I try to avoid. I know I’ve upset quite a few members already with my behaviour - but hey, I know I was in the right those times. Thanks for the advice though. Will try the next time.

hehe agree2 … i would choose the first option…slam that fella head on something then tell him he’s being rude..then use the machine for 1 set..n leaveee happily ever after..

I could swear that if i dont know better, id think that healthfreak is DM’s alter-ego….lol.

healthfreak: i dig ur style brotha…!

i try my best not to hog the machines best as i could… so please dun ‘cilok’ my toys while im in between my sets. i dun appreciate it and i bet NOBODY does. God didn fill our mouths with gold for storage for the world economy so it couldn’t fall off when you open it to say (applicable to especially trainers),
“Hey, mind if my client shares…or sumthin like that.”

I have this lil theory that i call ‘my lil airspace’. Trainers and members dun seem to share that lil insight with me and tend to clusterfu** around some areas. I’ll even rest in some corner on the floor if im dead tired coz i dun wanna get in the way of my brothas and sistas in the gym… so please realise that the machines and benches are not phone booths for you to make your calls in… or change into your superman outfits

Trainers needing manners? Hahahaha… Tell me bout it. Some of these boys were caught oogling MY girls in MY territory… tsk tsk tsk… bad idea. If you know who U are, never let them see U ever again. Coz, i dont wish to kill you… but they will ;)

But most of the time, i let the trainers have their way coz their incomes are on the line. My wee bit to make the world a better place…

Jay: He sounds like YOU actually.

Oh by the way.. I don’t have this problem anymore of people getting into my space… the last guy who came up to me and politely asked if he could use the machine.. actually had a little fear in his face.

It must be the N.O XPLODE.. or perhaps that thick vein that runs down my forehead when I’m pumped.

10 healthfreak 09.06.06 at 2:12 am

hehehe now i sound like alot of people ya…heh btw DM…NO Xplode…u seem mentioning it abit too often..if u dont mind me asking…how long have u been using it?how good is the product and whats the price?..and whats the special effect?..is it a 100% whey protein which get u lean or a mass gainer which make u hugee..?..kinda intrested since im out of my regular protein shake..plus my shaker also gone,…dammit..heh n jay…i like ur style..

healthfreak: Honestly, though the instructions on the tub says to use it before my workout - I only use it on certain workout days. The reason is simple - Its not cheap. RM237 for a tub of 20 servings! Thats 20 workouts only. As it says on the tub - NO Xplode is an ‘EXTREME PRE-TRAINING ENERGY & PERFORMANCE IGNITER” .. and I can bet you that you’ll KNOW what I’m talking about once you try it. Not for the weak of heart or for the weak newbie if you ask me. Its one of the rare few supps that are actually patented. Impressed yet?

You can read more at http://www.bsnonline.net.

If you’re interested, I can put you in touch with a distributor friend of mine.. he supplies direct to certain gyms. He should be able to give you a good price if you would like to try a tub - especially if you tell him that DM recommended you. ;)

i understands the feeling but rather than just stand there, perhaps that u can actually ask for their confirmation whether are they still using the machine or just hogging on the machine…wouldn’t it show that u are not so friendly at all? u actually can ask them to share it with u..please do not pass judgement if u dont understand the situation as well.

13 kuay_teow 05.29.07 at 4:50 pm

im new here to check out health stuffs(good job on d site, helps me loads).but i cant keep notice than how much trainers are bitched here..i in turn agree with wan as these problems occur in every gym but i dont agree with d way its handled by being quietly tempting to bash d trainer *guess ur a big fella aint’cha* n cowardly bitching here..instead here’s a few option for u,try asking or TELL d trainer that you’re in line for the machine..but instead u just stand there with a grim face..i guess that did’nt help rite?DEFINITELY!! while u THINK the trainer KNOWS that you’re using the machine,he might NOT~!.as for the trainer,i agree that he should be alert enough as well in order for this incident not to happen again (look how u made d fella sad~:p )..did’nt mean to offend anyone nor taking sides but i just think that situations should be clarified before posted here cuz it affects peoples and clubs..and d fact that a have an awesome trainer that gives me the results and benefits from the service.there’s always two-sides of the story bro.i stand corrected..but then again, like u,IM FREE TO VOICE OUT MY OPINION AS WELL eh?love the internet..:)

kuay_teow: Yes, I’m a big fella. And unlike you, I don’t need a big mouth to prove it. So.. at which branch are you a PT at?

15 fitchick 05.30.07 at 7:16 am

i guess e PT being in e ’service’ line shud b e one being more alert to gym-goers. i mean, he has (unknowingly?) set a bad example for himself and indirectly added more fuel to ‘PTs bad name’. also, he jz showed that he wasn’t being attentive to all’s needs.

on e other hand, he could have not noticed someone standing there, so it could possibly be a genuine erroneous move on his part. then again it comes down to attentiveness and basic courtesy.

16 HappyIpod 06.05.08 at 12:40 am

guys, in my opinion i do think that everyone need to play a role here. attentive sensitive to the environment a bit. no matter is a trainer or a member, just wait for your turn. at least ask 1st in a polite way. asking won`t be a tough thing i guess if we are born in this moden world where we was taught to be polite. plus especially to the trainers : members also got the right for using the facilities in the gym, so be smart when you have your training with your clients. wait for your turn or go for some other alternative or next workout before want to use certain equipment that got people using.it u are trainer u are well knowledgeable about alternative workout and quick enough to think of a solution.
i been to club where is very friendly and nice where every one there will talk to each other and help each other when need support plus everyone will ask politely when want to use the equipment to the people around there. but i also been to some club where got some annoying people monopoly a machine for some long time even after go for a short break and come back tell another person that is he is still using the machine for his training. assham on this type of people . selfish. so conclusion, if everyone can take the first step to be more polite and undestanding i believed our workout environment will be more happening. :) cheers.
