At True Fitness, i get;

- Steam sauna
- Hot/cold Shower facilities
- Shampoo/Bodywash
- Lockers/Hangers
- Shoe lockers
- Hair-dryers
- Free Parking (if u park in front the centre or by the roadside)
- Weighing scales (yeah, they’re almost always innacurate too!)

Have u forgotten towel service as well?

2 dailymuscle 01.25.06 at 11:49 am

As for me, even if my gym provided a towel service, I’d rather bring my own towel. Thanks Andrew - looks like True Fitness is pretty much the same, except that it has a towel service.

3 shades 01.25.06 at 1:43 pm

I heard that with the free towel service, a lot of the towels were never returned after use….

4 Andrew 01.25.06 at 4:23 pm

but in TF they’ll keep ur membership card until when u get the towel and only return it to u after u return the towels…

At Kampung Gym i have:
2 wooden benches to put our things
2 huge wall fan
1 toilet
1 bathroom
Free parking ( u can park downstair or whatever place u like becoz the traffic police is not going to care about u)

8 Tim @ EGOnutritions 10.19.06 at 12:31 am

Kampung Gym is the way to go! It is the way of the hardcore body builders! You just shut the fk up and do nothing but train!..

Fk the music, Fk the air cond, Fk the towel service, Fk the plastic bags… When it boils down to training, theres only 2 things you need. YOU and the WEIGHTS. Nothing else matters.

But then again, it wouldnt hurt to have all those eh.

9 nav 12.28.06 at 2:58 am

at city-kampong gym (dbkl) where i train, for rm2 you get:

free weights (bbell, db, olympic bar)
basic machines (leg press, hack squats, etc)
one long bamboo stick for streches
racist malays who stare at you when you walk in (but there are some nice ones tho )

of course you get to enjoy classic rock like eye of the tiger, we will rock you, repeatedly till the tune’s stuck in your head and you’re singing it all the time.

oh, and for cardio, the walk there is good enough… obscure place especially with public transport… takes me 30 mins one way…

10 Nigel 01.03.07 at 9:22 pm

Of all the gyms mentioned above, which one of it is the cheapest in terms of fees?

11 dailymuscle 01.05.07 at 11:38 am

Nigel: Of course, the neighbourhood gyms (kampung gyms) will be much cheaper than the big fancy gyms. As for the prices of the fancy gyms.. thats a never-ending price war.

12 hllau 05.31.07 at 8:20 pm

i’m also training one of the kpg gyms at my place. RM35 for 21 training sessions. RM 1+ per session.. well i only need weights and a few benches. so the gym suits me just fine.

13 fitchick 06.01.07 at 12:58 am

there’s one place i used to go to back when i was in high school, i think. it’s above the Pelita place.. same row as Delifrance and Guardian… SS2. diagonally opposite the SS2 McDonald’s.

The person in charge (if he’s still there) is Ahmad, a bodybuilder. I used to pay RM40 per month.

The place is pretty well-equiped, and has most of the machines etc that one wud require anyways. It’s a non-aircond place though.

14 dailymuscle 06.02.07 at 6:33 pm

hllau: Wow.. thats a good deal. I wouldn’t mind paying that even if its just for someone to spot me during my workout. Where is this gym of yours? Do tell, for everyone’s benefit.

fitchick: Geez woman.. you’re hardcore.

15 lex 08.11.07 at 11:48 am

true fitness - no towel, no drinks (just water), no locks, no nothing
lauyah

16 dailymuscle 08.13.07 at 1:22 pm

lex: Yeah… the day I went to check out True Fitness at Hartamas (free trial + invitation by a member), I realised I wouldn’t be able to lock my stuff in the locker. When I asked the sales people for help in getting a lock, they asked me to go buy one upstairs. I left, and drove over to Fitness First @ Manulife for my workout that day.

17 Jasmin 09.05.07 at 3:58 pm

im a true fitness member. service horrible. my locker was broken into and of course the cash all gone. wanted to terminate membership. faxed all the necessary letters. until now (already one month) no feedback. and ive been calling nearly everyday to get to the manager to no avail. already sent a letter to The Star to complain. everybody…….DO NOT ENROL WITH TRUE FITNESS!

18 hllau 09.06.07 at 3:28 pm

it’s not in KL. As I mentioned it’s a kampung gym in my hometown. heh..
of course the equipments there are not new or look new but they’re quite enough, extra bars, weight plates, smith machine, squat rack.

when i’m studying i’ll visit my university’s gym. it’s FREE.
there’s another place i think: MPSJ gym. just RM2-3 each session..

19 trey 09.07.07 at 10:25 pm

well, the gym i tain at (in Melaka) only charges RM35 per month.

equipment, there’s tonnes of the “fitness” stuffs as in the bikes, treadmill, rowing machine, all those fancy girly stuffs.. AND they have and awesome (well awesome enough) free weights section aswell.

the crowd is great, and you get great atmosphere almost everyday.

the only drawback is, there’s no fan or aircond in the weights section, so you’d be cooked even before your first set. haha

but its all good.

20 dailymuscle 09.10.07 at 1:34 am

Jasmin: I wrote you an email…. did you get it?

hllau & trey: well, some people are content with their kampung gym - and did you know, the some of the world’s top bodybuilders train in similar gyms in their respective countries? What matters is your focus, and you getting in the gym, hitting the weights hard, and getting home to rest & recover. At the end of the day.. that’s what it’s all about.

21 Boon Han 09.10.07 at 11:39 am

Heheheh…

DM, why do u think I re-signed again with FF. Granted TF has towel service, the towels that they provide have a damp smell. Never a problem so far with FF. As a returning member I had my membership upgraded to Passport Gold for the same amount… Good or what!

22 Boon Han 09.10.07 at 11:43 am

DM,

I wouldn’t mind training without the AC. Sometimes it’s like freezing yr nuts off… Have done kampung gym before (many moons ago)… Difference is I didn’t catch as much flu incidences as I do these days with either TF or FF… :p

23 desparil 09.10.07 at 2:57 pm

super hot front desk girl? weh.. which branch? which branch?

:P

24 Just Sharlene 09.10.07 at 4:57 pm

California Midvalley has swimming pool!

They also have towel service. I normally bring my own towel but towel service is very useful if you wanna use the steambath without getting your own towel all wet!

Also….California is cheaper! hehehe…..

25 anomie101 09.10.07 at 7:32 pm

what’s a kampung gym?

the gym located in my campus is the worst. no towel rental service, lack of equipments be it cardio machines or stregth training machines, no freebies, lousy free pt sessions and langsi trainers.

and i pay AUD199 for the whole of 3 months.

AND i hardly ever go. haven’t checked out the FF gym here tho..will prolly go on Wed. Will let u guys know whats it like. hehehehhehe

26 Zemien 09.11.07 at 9:37 am

We always hear of lockers break-in at those gyms where you have to bring your own locks. What do you do to secure your own lock? What kind of lock do you bring?

And why don’t we hear of break-ins at those places where the lock is provided at FF? I’m sure they’re not foolproof either…

27 eksk 09.11.07 at 2:26 pm

Dear Zemien, there are also break in FF also. just surf around that the various local forum. i’ve also highlighted this matter in this blog in one of the postings..

28 The Yoga Instructor 09.12.07 at 11:56 am

It bothered me from the day I found out, that FF doesn’t offer towel service. To me towel is a big factor! You wouldn’t want to be washing your own towel everyday because it’s left to damp and dry in your gym bag after morning workout-straight-to-office situation!

Since I go to True Fitness Hartamas like Andrew (although I mainly go to their yoga classes :D);

- Steam sauna
- Hot/cold shower facilities
- Shampoo/Bodywash
- Lockers/Hangers
- Shoe lockers
- Super powerful Hair-dryers
- Free Parking (well, define ‘parking’ first..)
- Weighing scales
- Free flow of coffee (mocha!), tea, hot green tea (I love this!)
- FRESH TOWELS!

Now since I’m a resident teacher at Yoga Zone, I assure you that our members get everything I listed above plus, Yoga Zone at Plaza Damas now has it’s own spa when you can book yourself (if not your friends and partner, as you do your class upstairs, you can wait downstairs in pure spa haven) hours of pampering session; massage, reflexology, facial, scrub for very reasonable price!

And our unbeatable perk of course,

ONLY at Yoga Zone, you’re privileged to know and be (literally) touched by an instructor who might not have nose-stud or remember your membership digits BUT you are guaranteed to not forget HER name, ever. He hee..

29 anomie101 09.12.07 at 1:28 pm

the yoga instructor : erm FF does offer towel rental service. except FF uptown. which i last checked, will soon do the same.
not sure how accurate this info is tho.

heard and read so much abt yogazone…just too bad i dun do yoga ehhehehhehe

30 trey 09.15.07 at 3:02 pm

forgot to mention that “my” gym is now operating from 10am to 1030pm EVERYDAY (Monday - Sunday) & even on public holidays!

now, how great is that for a measly RM35/mth? woohoo

31 dailymuscle 09.25.07 at 12:13 pm

trey: RM35/mth? I envy you. Anyway, how are things with you? Have you recovered completely yet from your antibiotic reaction? Hitting the gym already?

32 Nise 09.27.07 at 12:42 pm

I am moving to Melaka, any suggestions for gyms there? (not hotel gyms) Free weights mainly (no fancy ineffective machines needed) and cardio… any suggestions/recommendations (address if possible)?

Much appreciated, as not familiar with the town. Currently with TF (due to location) but kampung gym ok with me…

thanks!

33 trey 09.29.07 at 5:54 pm

DM : bro, things are going good for me right now. I have been able to train pretty good after the incident. I have shifted my training to night-time for the month of ramadhan and it works real good for me. Infact i’ve been able to break a few several personal best during this fasting month.

the body seems to lose some mass eventhough i try my best to eat and drink throughout the course of the night and early morning. but i guess we cant win it all :)

Nise : If you’re around Melaka Baru area (near Batu Berendam or Bukit Beruang) i really suggest OHM Gym (the gym where i go). I know alot of the members of the gym come from far just to train there because of the great atmosphere, good equipment and not to mention the cheap monthly rate.

34 Izzy 12.19.07 at 4:31 pm

hi there i’m going to melaka to study in MFA..
i’m wonderin if there is any gyms nearby…..

35 trey 12.19.07 at 8:18 pm

batch A20? lol

i’m finishing MFA in a month’s time or so.

i strongly suggest you look up OHM gym at Melaka Baru (5 to 10 minutes drive from MFA)

36 dailymuscle 12.27.07 at 11:32 am

trey: Thanks for sharing. By the way, what’s MFA?

37 trey 12.29.07 at 9:14 am

Malaysian Flying Academy.

and update : the OHM gym has just added a whole set of new dumbells (from 10lbs to 100lbs).

they also added a new bench press, dip/pullup station, and a couple more neat stuff.

the freeweights section is fantastic now.

man i’m going to miss this gym.

*sigh*

38 Izzy 01.05.08 at 11:50 am

39 aud 11.02.08 at 12:06 pm

40 tommy 11.30.08 at 11:57 pm

Hi Trey,
Really thanks for your useful information. I am currently in Melaka and wish to join OHM too very soon. By the way, can you provide further details of the OHM gym:
1) how much the monthly membership?
2) If not a member, can we pay per entry?
3) Is there any sauna/steam bath facility?
