Taboo: Female bodybuilding

by Noel Chelliah on Wednesday, Jan 25, 2006

To all the women who say that they avoid carrying weights because they are afraid of ‘getting big’, watch this eyeopener video (a National Geographic Feature) on the taboo issue of female bodybuilding.

It’s a bit lengthy but worth every minute. Watch how they deny taking steroids when it’s so obvious that they are. They sound and even LOOK like men!

My advice to women out there who aren’t giving their 100% in the gym is to not be afraid of the weights (and what you’ve just seen in this video) but to give your personal best and maximum effort at the gym in order to see the results you desire, cos no way can you ever get CLOSE to these muscular women without performance enhancing drugs.

The real reason that I don’t want to lift weights is

no. 1: I feel like a wimp doing it.

no. 2: Guys staring while lifting my body weight…. making me feel more like a wimp.

Why do you feel like a wimp? We all have to start somewhere. I felt like a FAT WIMP when I first started 6 years ago, and I see that very look at the newbies in the gym now too – but thats not a valid excuse not to get started.

If they wanna stare, let them stare. They’ve got issues. Either that, or perhaps you’re doing something wrong – which they should actually help correct you but most of the times, they do not.

Why not stick with the machines first. There’s no way you could go wrong or wimp around with the machines. :)

yeah… I know that it is impossible to get so huge while lifting weights. I’ve voiced this concern to my personal trainer when I first started PT and he told me that it is virtually impossible for women to get big … in fact, even the men have to work real hard to get the big muscles.

I don’t mind the machines so much … in fact, they are a part of my regular workout .. i credit them to my firm upper arms but in my gym, I would be forced to share the free weights area with a Mr. KL & Mr. Selangor … and me with my shaking arms at carrying 10 lbs each … aiyo …. very the malufying leh.

i agree with scorkes…it’s very difficult for guys to gain muscles let alone women. our muscles doesnt grow if we only do weights. it’s the combination of weight training, dieting and rest which fuel muscles growth. so, if you are only training with weights in the absence of the other 2 components, at best, you get a very tone physique.

to the ladies, do not feel like a wimp…unless you’re doing overhead shoulder press with a 10kg dumbell on each hand! in fact, if you do it with 1.25kg dumbells with perfect forms…i bet alot of guys would find it quite the sexy :)

scorkes:
Yes, your personal trainer is right. Women lack the male hormone testosterone which helps in muscle growth. And yes, men have to work REAL HARD to grow muscles!! I knew it.. you are one of those women who always thought that it was easy to us men to get muscular right? Heh heh. :P
And why are your arms shaking when you lift 10lbs? If it’s too heavy for you, start at a lighter weight, and build up your strength from there.

Humsupkiat:
Well said. And hey, what do you mean a woman with 1.25kg are sexy? I think they can look amazing even when they’re taking a sip of water from the fountain ;)

I’ve only been on the free weights area with Joe, my personal trainer. My arms usually shake in this one exercise that he makes me do… to lie on my back and lower to bar to my forehead. The reason my arms are shaking is because I’m always afraid that I will drop the bar and the stupid thing is going to come crashing down on my face!!!

Well, it’s just the same with men mar.. you think it’s that easy to get a good figure for us ladies meh? I didn’t know what it took for men to get muscular .. I just knew they look GOOD when they are! :P

Scorkes, you’re describing the Lying Triceps Extension. And I think your fear is justified, as this exercise is also commonly known as Skull Crushers!

You women look good too ;)
