Eggs as a protein source - getting the best deal!

To add on to my previous post on eggs as a preferred protein source for fitness enthusiasts, I wonder - where do you normally buy your eggs? At the supermarket? I would guess thats where most people do, but I normally get them elsewhere.

I’ve found that THE BEST place to buy chicken eggs are at the local night market (pasar malam as we Malaysians call it). You can get them in various grades and sizes, just without the fancy packaging.

Plus, you can easily buy them by the tray of 30 eggs each. The most I’ve ever paid for an egg is RM0.24 (cents) - and trust me, they were HUGE. Interestingly, even if the egg is so much more bigger than your ordinary supermarket egg, the size of the yolk is pretty much the same.. so you’re actually getting more egg white!

I’m not a big fan of the fancy eggs you get at the supermarket for a few reasons. To name a few:

1. They cost more
2. They’re pretty small
3. Reduced Cholesterol/added vitamins, etc doesnt really matter to me since I’m going to be throwing out most of the yolks (cholesterol is found only in the yolk)
4. They’re not as fresh
5. Inconvenient to buy them in trays of 12 each
6. It’s no fun carrying alot of eggs navigating your way out of a crowded supermarket

Athletes generally have higher protein requirements and therefore, we sometimes buy way more eggs than an ordinary person does. So it actually does make quite a significant difference to us when we fuss over our eggs. :)

So, the next time you stop by your supermarket to get some eggs - remember that you’re missing out on a better deal elsewhere.

hey there,
am wondering how bout ‘telur kampung’ compared to the normal ones?

2 dailymuscle 02.09.06 at 2:55 pm

chikanoz: Excellent question! ‘Telur kampung’ (also known as Free-range eggs) is indeed a local favourite. I found the following:

***********************************************
Free-range is the name given to eggs produced by hens that have been raised outdoors, however, because of climate, most hens are not raised entirely in the open. For this reason, eggs may be called free-range if the hens have daily access to the outdoors, but may not actually spend that much time outdoors. The nutrient content is the same for free-range eggs as it is with eggs produced from confined hens. The cost of a free-range egg is higher because of additional costs encountered by free-range egg producers.

***********************************************
So, with no really obvious benefits, do also take into account that these eggs are way smaller in size.. so you’re getting less egg white per egg. Sounds like a lose-lose situation to me!

Do you reckon “Telor Masin” has the same protein content as comparative to half boiled/cooked eggs?

4 dailymuscle 02.09.06 at 4:45 pm

I dont think the salt would lessen/decrease the protein content in an egg, but however, I fear it may denature or make the proteins ‘less usable’ by our bodies. Plus, I’ll probably die of high blood pressue if I consume salted eggs in the amounts I do now. :D

Re: free-range vs confined hens.

I would rather pay 50% more for free-range hens. Do a quick google search on how they maltreat confined hens - including cutting off beaks to ensure they don’t peck each other in overly cramped cages, very little space to move at all, usage of hormones and other diet additives, and many more, some very cruel, all in the name of more profit.

The thought of eating eggs by such maltreated hens sometimes give me goose pimples. Imagine the negative karma passed into them! If there is really a mind-body connection, surely these eggs have something funky going on with them, what with the hens all mental from the unnatural cruelty.

omg ur blog is full of useful information….thanks for sharing! I’m serious into building a lean and muscular body…jz started a few months back though… oh what do you do with your egg yolks? throw them away????

8 dailymuscle 04.16.06 at 11:38 pm

cK: thats what I try to do on my site… practical and useful info that the average guy/girl can relate to… none of the mumbo-jumbo you would find on a bodybuilding site. ;)

As for the egg yolks… yes, I throw them away. Would you rather eat all that fat and cholesterol? Don’t think so. However.. my dad tends to save some of the yolks every now and then for my doggies though… I believe dogs have a unique enzyme in them which allows them to consume high levels of cholesterol.. I could be wrong though. Cheers. Hope to see you around here more.

cK: You’re in the US? Lucky you! There are other supps you can buy at really low prices - for example, there’s no way we Malaysians can enjoy the really cheap prices in bodybuilding.com for instance..but you can!

jay: would love to bro…where’s the animal shirt????? sunk into the deep ocean??? hahaha

21 Kevlin 05.17.08 at 11:32 am

Well DM u r right about buying eggs from pasar malam, i notice even if u buy those 30 in a tray which look big size egg but actually the yolk is quite big too so less egg white, but when i bought those from pasar malam the eggs are of the same size but the yolk is smaller and it mean more white, next time i’m going to buy those eggs from pasar malam and is way more cheaper unless those super market are having sale which is more cheap, and by the way if you feel like eating the yolk is better to buy those like Omega with DHA or some fancy write out they put.
