Protein shakes as an excellent health food

Bodybuilders aren’t the only people who drink protein shakes every day. In fact, protein shakes make an excellent health food - great tasting, convenient, portable, and highly nutritious. Whether your goals are to lose weight, build muscle, or just improve your overall health, incorporating protein shakes into your daily meals can be a great way to reach your goals.

If you haven’t already guessed by now, protein shakes do more than just aid bodybuilders pack on muscle tissue. For everybody (not only bodybuilders & athletes), a good protein shake can help you:
- increase energy levels
- increase your lean muscle mass (It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female - this is always a good thing!)
- enhance your immune system
- promote healing/recovery
- boost metabolism (which in turn, burns fat quicker)
- reduce appetite and food cravings (protein digests slower than carbohydrates)
- increase your heart health
- lower cholesterol and blood pressure

Unfortunately, choosing a great tasting and high quality protein powder is not easy. Make the wrong choice and you’ll be stuck with having to drink shakes that taste like chalk (not that i’ve tasted chalk).

Not only that, protein powders can be really expensive when compared to the tin of MILO or Horlicks or packet of Milk you’re so used to buying.

Some brands have recipes that are geared towards taste, and not nutrition and are loaded with sugar — often 30 grams or more — and frequently have no more than 10 or 15 grams of protein. Thats the nutritional profile of a milk shake not a protein shake!

So, to do everyone a favour, I’m going to do the choosing for you.

Now, I’ve tried all flavours from EAS Myoplex, Designer Protein, GNC’s Pro Performance Range, Weider’s Muscle Builder, Horley’s and Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey. So trust me when I say that I’ve tasted all sorts of protein powders out there to have learnt that sometimes, flavours like ‘Vanilla Ice-cream’ actually means ‘leftover Vanilla pudding from last week’s bachelor party’.

Taking into consideration the quality, results, taste, price, recommendations from others, I strongly suggest Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Protein. If you’re a Chocolate lover, try mixing 1 scoop of powder with a glass of milk. The taste alone would blow you away - believe me. If you think you can find a better tasting protein powder with a higher protein content, less sugar, etc, all at a great price - dont bother. Trust me. There just isnt anything better you can get at this price. It is 100% value for money.

Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard
I practically stopped trying new protein powders the moment I tried this. This is my protein powder of choice and I’ve been consuming this for the past 2 years at least. And I also know of many others who have done the same.

The cost? GNC Malaysia sells it for RM270+ for a 5lb tub (77 servings with 24g of Protein per serving).

And now, for some good news! What if I told you that you can buy this 5lb container for only RM180? I’ve mentioned this before in previous posts, but have yet to disclose my source. In fact, for RM180 - they even deliver it your home, at no additional cost! (Klang valley only). Anywhere else would incur a small delivery charge. Excited yet? I know I am! :P

All shall be revealed tomorrow. Stay tuned.

shades: wait no more. Check out my latest post.

3 surfnux 02.26.06 at 1:24 pm

so how long will it last in terms of days? Like for non-bodybuilders, how many intake recommended for us? Seems nice.

4 dailymuscle 02.26.06 at 5:06 pm

surfnux: To meet my goals, I consume 2 servings post-workout, and once in a while, I’ll consume 1 serving some other time of the day for a total of 3 servings per day - doing this lasts me about 30 days.

For starters, you could just consume 1 serving post-workout after every workout, and assuming you workout even as much as 20 times a month (which is ALOT), this would easily last you 3 months.

5 surfnux 02.27.06 at 10:34 pm

icic. Any work out will do right? Like let say a 30 min / 1 hr jog, swimming session and all. Will try it out. Hope can get rid of the fats faster.

6 dailymuscle 02.28.06 at 11:01 am

surfnux: Yeah, the best time to consume it will ALWAYS be after a workout when your body needs it the most - plus, whey protein is absorbed quickly by your digestive system - thus reaching your starved muscles quicker.

So if you only wish to consume 1 precious serving a day .. then the right time would be after your workout. Always. You can get your protein from other food sources for other times of the day.

Good luck on your weight loss - work hard, and never look back. ;)

I used to take Weider’s (hey, those 20lb bags were the cheapest). Sometimes, I err… get gas.

Is that an issue with Optimum? Some say you might get a rank or rancid kind of body odor as well.

8 dailymuscle 03.01.06 at 11:47 am

aw: 20lb weider protein bags? Are you sure they are 20lb, and not 10lb and are they protein powders or mass gainers?

Optimum has this in 10lb bags as well.. but have yet to see one in real life. At least not yet. Perhaps the guys at EGOnutritions would be good enough to ship in some of these for us for maximum value-for-money!

The gas you get from Weider’s could be due to a high concentration of lactose in their formula. You wont get any of these in Optimum’s range. They claim to be very low in lactose, and I have to agree cos I dont seem to have any problems. FYI, I can’t stomach regular milk, I need low-lactose milk, so if Optimum isnt upsetting my stomach, I dont think you’ll have any problems as well.

Hey dailymuscle!

Great site! :)

When you say “workout” - does it include classes like Bodypump, Bodycombat, Steps, etc? Or is it only restricted to weight training?

So do you think it will be wasteful to drink protein shakes after Bodypump/Bodycombat? :)

Thanks.

10 dailymuscle 03.02.06 at 6:44 pm

Dear Celestine - thanks for dropping by! When I say workout - I mean any physical activity done long enough to be considered an exercise session. It is not restricted to weight training at all. If I were you, I would certainly have a protein shake after Bodypump/Bodycombat/Steps, etc.

If a particular day was my ‘off-day’ from weight training, and if I happened to do my cardio on that day - I would consume a protein shake after my cardio. Basically, the protein would be put to good use if consumed after a workout. Hope I answered your question? :)

11 Jet 04.05.06 at 4:24 pm

Can’t agree more!!! This stuff is the best tasting protein that I have ever bought…The last one i bought was lumpy and I felt like I was ingesting chalk+wax powder each time I take it. And it’s cheaper than other brands of protein as well. Best of all it’s whey isolate as main source!

12 dailymuscle 04.05.06 at 6:06 pm

Jet - Indeed, it is value for money and tastes amazing especially when mixed with milk. I know many who use this as an essential part of their diet. You wont want to switch to another brand once you’ve tried it!

13 Boon Han 02.14.07 at 10:44 am

I recently discovered this website and have been an ardent fan ever since. Talking about protein supplements, I have tried quite a fair bit of stuff from GNC and most recently tried out Optimum Nutritions 100% Whey Protein.. Love the taste and it just mixes so easily.

I’ve always been a Chocolate fan, what’s the Chocolate Mint like?

14 Chrisdaanimal 02.14.07 at 3:17 pm

Boon Han: Choc Mint flavour is not bad to say the least… At least the mint taste natural and it goes pretty well blended with milk :)

15 dailymuscle 02.16.07 at 12:46 pm

Boon Han: The choc mint is pretty alright… but some people absolutely hate it. So it boils down to personal preference. If it’s taste you’re concerned about… there’s always… BSN’s SYNTHA6! Once you try it.. you’ll never go back to any other previous brand.

16 Boon Han 02.16.07 at 6:45 pm

Just picked up the Syntha6, will try it out tomorrow when I head to the gym :D

17 Chrisdaanimal 02.16.07 at 6:52 pm

Boon Han: In my opinion, supps that gives results are the main importance… I mean who eats supps for the taste right? Lol…
The smell of opening a tin of Animal Pak can downright make a person throw up on the spot but people still take it cause it works ;)

18 Boon Han 02.16.07 at 6:58 pm

Well, that’s true… Then again, i do like a protein supplement that mixes fairly easily without tasting like a piece of cardboard. The million dollar question is can we get it all :D

I don’t mind the animal pak smell, have tried previous vitamins that have a similar smell..

Cheers buddy..

19 Chrisdaanimal 02.16.07 at 7:12 pm

Boon Han: Hmm… Protein supps tat taste like cardboard… Ewww… Never had one that tasted that badly before… You do take Animal Pak too? Great :) Another animal supporter xD

20 Boon Han 02.16.07 at 8:24 pm

Chris,

Just picked up my stash of Animal Pak and Syntha6 after trying various items on offer at GNC…

cheers..

21 dailymuscle 02.17.07 at 12:05 pm

Boon Han: Obviously.. you havent tasted your Syntha6 yet. ;)

By the way.. the Animal Pak stinks big time. Just one pack in my locker and my entire locker stinks!! You may also notice that when you pee.. its gonna be a very weird colour. Thats totally normal and it only means that its working. Good luck!

22 vico 02.24.07 at 3:30 am

So where do we get that RM180 for 5LB’s again? I wonder, is it cheaper if it was bought overseas? Like in Australia? Might be heading down under for a couple of weeks, just wondering if I should wait until then. ANyone has any thoughts on this?

23 dailymuscle 02.24.07 at 6:33 pm

vico: I don’t know about the price in Australia, but I would say that its pretty likely you’ll pay less than RM180 for it. Otherwise, head over to EGOnutritions.com.

24 TheGargantuan 03.23.07 at 6:28 pm

Hello guys i am new to this website, upon reading some of your old article while i was googling, i stumboled on this “Optimum Nutrition’s 100% Whey Protein. RM180″. Can i know where can i get it in Malaysia? I seriously want to know~ plz tell me

25 benjamin 03.23.07 at 7:45 pm

26 TheGargantuan 03.24.07 at 2:36 am

thank u so much benjamin~
i owe u~

anyway
i have some cash now
to buy some protein and megamass 2000
the thing is i have been using celltech and nitrotech from GNC
protein and creatin
the sales girl told me that its effective if u use it together
so i bought both of it and taken them
but so far not much of improvement
and i was shock when i found out the protein was so light and the creatin has more~

have no idea why they need to make such a big bucket for so lil protein

anyway my point is
should i get Weiders Milk+Egg+whey protein or stick to the GNC cell tech and nitro tech creatin + protein

and my iranian friends those freaking big size ppl from the 300~ haha
recommend me Mega Mass 2000~
so should i buy all of them ?

and some of the people in the gym
recommend me L-vitamin i think its L-Carnitine or some scientific name
do i need those stuff?
what about hardcore hydroxycut? has anyone try it before?

and again thank u benjamin~

27 benjamin 03.24.07 at 7:10 pm

welcome bro…hope daily muscle can organize some bulk and we buy it at a cheaper price …

I’m a follower of ON’s 100% Whey Protein as well. I LOVE their chocolate flavour. More intense cocoa flavour and doesn’t taste like watered down chocolate milkshake like some brand. I’ve tried ON’s Cookies and Cream too, but I find it too sweet for my liking (due to added HFCS in the ingredients for this flavour only) and the smell is too intense.

I stay away from GNC brand whey protein. I tried both vanilla and chocolate flavour before. Vanilla left a bitter aftertaste if you mixed too much water. Took it back to GNC and they suspect the sweetener amount might have been reduced (whey is generally bitter in taste). Chocolate tasted like watered down leftover milkshake with very mild cocoa taste.
