Know your bodybuilding supplements - Nitric Oxide

Ask any bodybuilder how creatine works, and I’m sure you’ll get a pretty decent answer, and the same goes for protein. But ask them how Nitric Oxide works, and chances are you’re only gonna get a blank look.

Especially here in Malaysia - I bet 90% of gym goers have no idea what on earth Nitric oxide has got to do with bodybuilding. I asked a fellow gym freak friend once, if he would like to try supplementing with Nitric Oxide and he replied “Hey.. isnt that what they used in the cars in the movie Fast & Furious?”. Well.. I didn’t know whether to respond to that or to laugh first. But he was certainly referring to Nitrus Oxide though. The Nitric Oxide talked about here is NOT the same as Nitrus Oxide which is used in your car. Don’t think you would want to supplement your diet with that.

nitric oxide supplementsOver the past few years, supplement companies have released all sorts Nitric Oxide supplements in droves. It’s been ages since i bought a current issue of Muscle & Fitness, but also no surprise to me at the magazine store that you cant open a bodybuilding magazine without seeing countless pages of ads trying to convince you on their next great Nitric Oxide supplement.

Now for a brief history lesson:
Nitric Oxide (NO) was originally discovered in the 80’s by 2 scientists who were studying an unknown gas that seemed to be only present for an instant every time a muscle contracted/blood vessel dilated. So, eventually they discovered this gas and it was called nitric oxide.

So how can supplementing NO help a bodybuilder?
Also known as vasodilators, Nitric oxide has the unique ability to increase blood flow (do I see your eyes widening?), and any increase in blood flow has always been a subject of interest to bodybuilders who are always looking for that extra edge. Why?

1. Increased blood flow delivers more nutrients (e.g., amino acid, creatine, glucose, and oxygen) to muscle cells through your blood, helping them to grow faster than normally possible during the recovery phase (when your muscles are recovering after workouts). Increased blood flow also carries away byproducts (such as CO2, lactic acid) that tire the muscle and decrease performance.

2. Reduced inflammation - helps muscles that have been subjected to extreme stresses. You recover from the pain faster.

3. An increase in blood flow to the stimulated area also ultimately causes your muscles to get ‘pumped’ and stay that way for around 40 minutes after training.

4. Also, one highly desirable ’side-effect’ that Nitric Oxide has on you is that it tremendously increases vascularity (the visibility of veins on your body). On well developed individuals who have low bodyfat levels, your veins will appear to be really thick and freaky and stick out like a garden hose.

The manufacturer’s instructions should be followed in all instances (actually, this applies to every supplement you take - don’t try to be a smartass and think you can get better gains by increasing/altering dosages).

In a nutshell, increasing blood flow to the muscle enhances growth, strength development, recuperation, and appearance. Now tell me who wouldn’t want to be bigger, stronger, and able to recover faster than ever before? Vasodilators are available at EGOnutritions.

Now the next time someone asks you “Dude, whats Nitric Oxide?”, you too can sound like a supplement guru. Otherwise, just direct them to www.dailymuscle.com ;)

i know it can be found in some products of protein and creatine
under the ingredients list

i was actually eyeing on the ONs Amino 2222 325s priced RM179.61 at http://www.EGOnutritions.com thanks to Mr. DailyMuscle for the info

TheGargantuan: Well.. do make yourself at home. :)
I can’t promise I know the answer to all your questions, but I can help.

I’ve answered your questions below:

Wat is is the purpose of Amino?
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and muscle tissue - your body is able to break down the protein you consume into these individual amino acids.

Does one need to buy a separate Amino acid?
Not really.. unless you know for sure that you are lacking a particular amino acid perhaps? I believe a balanced diet with sufficient protein intake from whole foods, lean meats, would eliminate the need for any amino acid supplementation.

I know it can be found in some products of protein and creatine under the ingredients list, but i was wondering do we need it?
As I said, protein consists of Amino Acids.. so you’ll find in on the labels of these products for sure. Sometimes, certain products/brands tend to hype up and play around with the words aminos/protein/etc to ultimately confuse the user to their advantage.

I was actually eyeing on the ONs Amino 2222 325s priced RM179.61 at http://www.EGOnutritions.com
I know some people who rely on aminos instead of protein shakes for their source of protein after their workouts.. maybe it’s just a matter of preference.. But i still prefer my protein shake rather than chewing down on some really large tablets. If you’re keen on trying this product, I must say that compared to other brands, etc - this does provide the best value for money in my opinion, and they actually taste pretty decent (almost like horlicks).

Also wat is L-carnitine? and why are they so many L-”other names”. Do we need em? i was told that L-carnitine is the same as Amino acid. Is that true?
L-carnitine is not an amino acid, but something that is formed by your body FROM other amino acids. Remember, that there are 23 amino acids that make up proteins. Sometimes amino acids are referred to with an L- in front of the name, and the reason why this is so would require someone with a chemistry background perhaps to explain it to you. Sorry! Hope i’ve helped clear your doubts?

Also.. I have to say that you’ve asked ALOT of questions, nothing wrong with curiosity (it’s a good thing!), but I feel that most of your questions could have been answered with a little effort on searching at Google or bodybuilding forums. I always believe in looking for information/doing a little research on my own before i pose a question.. and thats a habit that will prove very very useful as you learn more about keeping fit and taking charge of your health. Good luck!

Mr Daily muscle whens your birthday?

7 dailymuscle 03.28.07 at 11:52 pm

TheGargantuan: Glad to be of help…:). Thanks for the kind words… I do enjoy what I do.. so, it’s all part and parcel of my everyday life to try and help in an area I feel I can be of value to others…

My bday? I was born in the month of June, 1979. A gathering? Well… as cool as it sounds.. and as eager as I am to be able to see who you guys and my many readers are… I’m pretty sure I have an equal amount of people who dont really like me. I’ve been threatened to be sued once, I know that there are quite a number of Personal Trainers who are trying real hard to find out who I am, and so on… so.. for now.. I guess I have to remain anonymous… sigh. Perhaps we could all decide on one day where we all wear something to the gym to identify ourselves to one another, and I of course, will be there to see who you guys are.. like some kind of secret society thingy. Perhaps I could mail out a bunch of tshirts as freebies.. and everyone wears them on a designated day? Hmm.. what do you guys think? I’m itching to do something.
