Will Exercise Make My Breasts Smaller?

by Noel Chelliah on Monday, Apr 10, 2006 ·

The answer is quite simply – NO. Developing your pectorals(chest muscles) won’t make your breasts smaller. Many of you would have heard this tale countless number of times, but let me tell you now that this is yet another myth about women’s weight training/female bodybuilding that just does not seem to go away!

Will Exercise Make My Breasts SmallerYes, strength training has an overall toning effect, however – if you’re dieting and you lose a significant amount of body fat, THEN you will reduce breast size (but of course, this decrease will also be proportionate to the fat loss from your entire body). So if you lose weight and end up with smaller breasts.. its because thats how you truly were meant to look like.. and there’s nothing wrong with that. So blame the shrinkage on your diet/weightloss routine, don’t blame the exercise.

Muscle and fat are very different types of tissue and we cannot turn one into the other, and women’s breasts are mostly fatty tissue. Your breasts won’t actually get bigger, but what is actually happening when you perform the right chest exercises is that you would tone the muscle underneath the breast tissue, and this will cause your chest to ‘appear’ to be bigger. Therefore, it is impossible to actually increase breast size through weight training but what you’re able to do is to only create an ‘appearance’ of bigger breasts. Isn’t that good enough?

Truth is, if you go below 12% body fat (which you shouldnt be unless you’re a competing female bodybuilder, etc), your breast size WILL decrease.. so don’t be surprised when that happens. If it’s still bigger breasts you want.. then one solution for you is to either gain fat or get breast implants.

GIRLS do not pay attention to this this is incorrect! If you are working out, doing body combat classes, boxing classes, press ups etc – you WILL lose your breasts – this is very bad misinformation as it all depends on what type of body you are, and women can and will in some cases develop muscle like a man, it has nothing do with testosterone as some old wives will tell you and on your body type – there are three!

Take a look at female sports competitors….very small breasts. I have had large breasts on a tall slim frame all my life – I started boxing classes and changed my work out routines (i used to just jog to keep my legs and bum small) and joined a gym. My breasts reduced drastically and now have muscle where my top boob used to be and I am trying desperately to get them back and waste the muscle. I put half a stone on in muscle just doing cardio at the gym and added a few cms, I have since quit the gym and almost back at normal weight and slim again.

Do a bit more research on body types and figure out which type you are and then decide which exercise is best. A good few miles walking a day will do you no harm :)

Glad to hear exercise doesn’t contribute to making breasts smaller. It’s true that when I eat a low-fat diet, my boobs shrink. When that happens I eat avocados and sometimes chips. That seems to plump them up again after 2 weeks. Those are the only two foods that make a big difference to me.

Yes, weight loss will most likely result in a size reduction. However, go easy – i wouldnt recommend a drastic diet or exercise routine if you’re new to exercising.

Hi I could really do with some help/advice.
Im 20 and a 30GG, I weigh about 9st8lbs and am 5″6. I went to see a doctor about a breast reduction today and he told me the NHS cant fund it anymore and suggested weight loss as the only real way to decrease them naturally. I agree that exercise would make a difference but I’m quite small already and I used to be underweight and still had a big chest and I dont want to go back to that. Just wondering if anyone has any advice based on my situation cause I’ve read alot about big women with big breasts managing to lose weight and go down cup sizes, but what does a small woman with big breasts do? Thanks

I have the same problem!!! I’m also, 20 and I weigh around 120lbs with a height of 5’2, and I wear 34DD. I have been trying to go down to 100lbs, just to reduce the size of my breasts. I even picked up Insanity, and started trying to do some of the exercises, not that I’d say I’ve been very committed…. I have noticed that I have been looking more muscular, but I wouldn’t say thinner… In fact, lately I feel like my breasts having gotten, much wider I’d say….
I hate it!!!

Ya’ll need to start doing some cardio exercises, such as doing 1-mile or 2-mile runs every other day. Cardio is what burns the fat. Toning exercises are obviously more for toning muscles. So add in some cardio in your workout and you’ll see your boobs start to shrink to that runner’s chest appearance in a matter of weeks.

I’m 5’8″, and I weighed 155 pounds a year ago. Since then, I’ve lost 30 pounds. My breasts went from DDs to Cs. No joke. I never realized how much my positive body image had to do with having big boobs. I don’t feel like there’s any reason for guys to check me out any more. It’s irrational for me to be so insecure about it, but I’m really preoccupied with my breasts all of a sudden.

are there any exercises that doesn’t involve machines since I don’t have access to a gym? I’ve been doing pushups but have seen only the slightest results. (My arms are toning up though)

Could you give me some tips for that or refer me to an article/video? Thanks a lot!

Any exercise is better than no exercise – be mindful of what you eat, watch the quantities of your food – and exercise. The rest will fall into place. You’re also still young!

Please help me out here…I’ve read different things on different websites…
I’m 5’2 and 120lbs. I want to tone (get rid of a little bulging belly) and GAIN WEIGHT. I know that in order for my muscles to show, I need to BURN FAT. I do NOT want to lose my breasts! Do I continue to eat what I normally eat and cut out fried foods and white rice…OR do I go all the way out and create a diet that includes a sufficient amount of protein and cuts out fat?

Is 15-20minutes of cardio before each work out ENOUGH?
These are simple questions yet every person (including trainers) I ask, answer it differently. I appreciate you taking the time to respond :)

Question: You mentioned that losing a significant amount of overall body fat is what would contribute most to breast-size decreasing. I don’t have a large amount of body fat at all, and I’m mostly just aiming to get rid of that ever-present tummy pudge to actually show off my abs, and tone up overall, since I’m pretty healthy/fit otherwise. I’m fairly big-busted, and my chest probably contains the most fat on my body, moreso than my stomach. I’m specifically doing a lot just to focus burn on my abs/core, but can I expect to see a significant change in bust size, since that’s really the biggest fat “deposit”(so to speak) on my body?
Than you in advance!

Hi ladies, I appreciate all your comments and also your willingness to post your concerns on this page.

Based on the comments on this page, the majority of you ladies have trouble reducing the size of your breasts, and the rest of you, have trouble increasing bust size.

However, both issues can be resolved with weight training and exercise – aim for a weight gaining program for those who are underweight/wish to increase their bust size, and those who wish to reduce the size of their bust, would be able to see results if you were to follow a weightloss program.

Also, it is important to incorporate exercises that target the chest muscles effectively. For a list of some of these exercises:

http://www.fitnessideas.org/2008/exercise-library/chest-press/
http://www.fitnessideas.org/2008/exercise-library/incline-chest-press/
http://www.fitnessideas.org/2008/exercise-library/knee-push-up-modified-push-up/
http://www.fitnessideas.org/2008/exercise-library/push-up/
http://www.fitnessideas.org/2008/exercise-library/supine-chest-fly/
http://www.fitnessideas.org/2008/exercise-library/wall-push-up/

Some of the above exercises can be easily done at the comfort of your own home without the use of any weights. Try that for a start. :)

All the best!

Now the thing is i dont get back or neck pains, god has been greatfull that way towards me, and so has my boyfriend never complained but ofcourse does get irritated at all the public when they see me with amusement..

i am extremely scared of surgery so thats out of the question. I do work out but my only issue is that i have a hormonal imbalance and thyroid at the same time.

So i am guessing these are the reasons of the huge boobs that i own.

i have been through alot of sites… gone through the entire thread circle on this blog too.. but i havent gotten what i want.

I would like someone’s help in knowing how i can be at home and do massages in the right technique.. is there any video that can demonstrate the same? which oils would be helpful while massaging.

Please do let me know.

I am about to be married next year i want to be very presentable before i meet my inlaws and i want to stand out and surprise every one who has always seen me like this…

Breasts will definitely shrink a bit with weight loss. I’m 5’2 and 157 lbs. Not very proportionate, but I started working out every day since the beginning of January. My bf says I do look a slimmer, but my breasts have also shrunk a bit. I’m still a size 38D, but my breasts look flatter than before. I’ve done mostly cardio workouts and with great sweat comes great boob shrinkage, lol. I think I’ll start working out on my pecs since some of the posts here says that it tones the muscles under the breast and can prevent them from getting even smaller.

Tiffany: lol. you’re only FOURTEEN! u have not reached full puberty yet aye? take a chill pill n relax.. meanwhile.. do some chest exercises using weights. it will help firm up the muscles under your breasts. also u wudnt wanna do alot of stuff that will stunt your puberty, pls mind that fact.

I am 14. I weigh 125, and I am 5’4 1/2. Pretty much 5’5.
I want to go down to 115-110. I know I will lose my boobs, right? Oh by the way I am a 34B. I HATE my size. I want to be a FULL C. Really really bad.
I was thinking about loseing the weight and then GAINING it back in MUSCLE. Could that possibly increase my breast size? Or atleast gain it back to what it was?

Reply

Brian May 30, 2007 at 10:13 pm

If a woman wants to develop her chest and enhance your bustline just do decline chest exercises… this will target the muscles lower in the chest and as they grow they will lift and push the breasts making them appear more shaply and larger. Regular (flat) or worse, incline chest press exercises will develop the chest higher up and above the breasts which detracts from the feminine breast / figure. Tip: avoid flat and incline chest pressing exercises and use decline chest press exercises…

Michelle: Sorry for the late reply… your comment slipped me. The reduction to a 36 A IS because of your weight loss.. you see, breast tissue is mostly fat. I’m sure you would have also noticed a significant reduction in your overall size as well, and that your clothes would fit so much better now? Cos when you lose weight.. fat loss occurs from all over your body, and not just a specific area. If this fitter version of you has a 36 A cup size, then you’ve just got to accept that, because thats what you are supposed to look like… its not as if the exercise has tampered with your genetics and made you look like someone you’re not supposed to be (I hope I’m making sense). There’s nothing much you can do to significantly increase the size of your breasts with exercise, but keep training with the weights and it could give you an ‘appearance’ of a fitter, firmer, and uhmm.. ‘perkier’ chest. ;). Hope I’ve answered your question.

mkness: Eating well and exercising never hurt anyone.. like I explained to Michelle, “If this fitter version of you has a 36 A cup size, then you’ve just got to accept that, because thats what you are supposed to look like…”.

hi, i have a question concerning this topic. over this past month and a bit i have started working out at the gym regularly, about three times a week, and as a part of my routine i do bench presses, both with the actual bench and then with the incline machine. (granted I can only bench like 15 pounds, 30 on the incline, but i’m working on that!) when i was about 128 pounds my bra size was 36 C. now i’m about 118 pounds and i’ve gone all the way down to a 36 A. is this because of the weight loss? i’ve only lost about 10 pounds, after all. thanks so much for the help, i’ve been freaking out! also, if it IS because of the weight loss, is there anything i can do to increase my bust without gaining the weight back? thanks.

carolyne: You answered the question yourself – you need to get back to what you were before you were overweight. Diet, and exercise will do the trick. And from there on.. a change in lifestyle and what you eat is essential to prevent you from gaining back those pounds…

See my writeup here: http://www.dailymuscle.com/2007/02/21/bust-size-would-it-decrease-with-sufficient-exercise/

All the best.

most people who are over weight and start to work out will loose weight in the face and boobs first. that is why people notice it when you loose weight. once your weight is to where you want it continue to work out and eat enough so you dont loose anymore weight.

everyone is going on about Bs and Cs…I’m 32DD and i only came on this website as it came up on a google search for exercise to make my breasts smaller. Those girls who are Bs and Cs are lucky and i wish i was that size – mine are a nightmare. If i get a good supporting bra i cant wear strappy tops because the band is bigger than others just so its structured. And when i run or even walk briskly its awful! Its hard again because most bras dont come in DD and if they do only in a 34. so ive thought i ought to do something about it, hence my google search. if you could help me by advising me on different exercises i could i would be really grateful.

oh and how would the bc pill fit into all that, cuz i just started it. thanks!

n wear proper sports bra w full support rather than ur everyday casual bras though it may look better.. coz u dont want no saggy boobs.

cut out fats, polyunsaturated, high-calorie food stuff, cut down carbs (if u must, tk brown rice, wheat noodles or fibrerich bread), cut out soft drinks (including 100 plus if u’re jz gym-ing n not some marathon runner), reach for e tv n not e remote ctrl, tk e steps not e lifts..

kalpana: I don’t know if Yoga exercises could help do that.. i’m not really an expert when it comes to Yoga. What I could suggest is that you watch what you eat (control your calories) and engage in light exercise frequently.. over time, when there is an overall bodyweight/bodyfat reduction, your the size of your breasts should decrease.

I’ve lost weight in the past and unfortunately gained it back. The first time I lost weight though I was a 36B and then ended up becoming a 36C after the weight lost, which was kind of weird. I lost about 20 lbs, unfortunately gained it back so I’m tryin to lose that and a bit more. The facts say I will lose breast size, but let’s hope I get lucky and it won’t happen and maybe it’ll get bigger again?? =D The breast size on my mom’s size isn’t that great, but apparently my grandma was pretty endowed, maybe I’ll be lucky with genes? My bra size is really about a 35 but 36 just feels more comfortable, maybe when I do lose weight I’ll end up being a 34D which is approximately the same as 36C or a 34C.

Hi,

I’m 5’1 and 127 lbs. My body is not at all proportionate. My top half is…we’ll call it fuller than my lower half. At 19 my breasts are a size 38C. You can say they are driving me insane. I have just recently started a diet and exercise program to help me achieve my goal weight (Somewhere about 115lbs) I was wondering if you thought that was a significant amount of weight for it to be possible that my bust size might also decrease?

I’m just really really tied up with work lately… which also explains why I have not been updating as often. I even did not have the time to come up with a writeup which would be published in a local fitness magazine I really am looking forward to… Sigh.

I should be much more relaxed after the 8th of February. So please put up with my absence for a bit..

the breasts r mainly made up of fat cells, besides blood vessels, e muscles (pectoralis minor and major) and for us females: glands – milk glands.

as a dancer, i really appreciate e god-given size that i have, because when i dance, it doesn’t really ‘burden’ me all that much. i hav dancer friends who r really well-endowed (36B, 38A, 38B i think) n hav confessd that they would prefer smaller breasts as it is not as tiresome.

tiresome, in e sense that “when e legs hv landed on e floor, e boobs r still in motion”. also, it is sometimes difficult to maneouvre or execute certain stunts without lookg clumsy. costumes at times r an issue. in fact, sometimes certain roles in a dance item r given to smaller-chested/ ‘skinnier’ dancers because they literally ‘FIT’ e role.. not becoz they r better dancers.

but do not stop doing e chest exercises, as they do mk e breasts more supple.. tried n proven. it might be smaller (a cup size is like, wow! how did u do that?) but it’s definitely firmer, and looks great under a sports bra or a tight top ;)

Yea, you def lose some size at the beginning of weight loss. I am 5’10″ and went from 156 to 137. I also went from a very full 38C to a 34B.

But then I started doing a lot of chest exercises like one handed push ups and bench presses. I am now a small 36C, which I really like. In fact, it was having to buy 38 band bras that motivated me to lose weight in the first place. It’s too close to 40!!!

Babita: if you’re overweight, then starting yourself on a weightloss plan + a calorie reduced diet will definitely help you. Even if you’re not overweight.. a weightloss plan can help because your breasts are mainly fatty tissue. Just remember that EXERCISE ALONE wont help you… perhaps thats why you’ve always failed so far.

In a way, yes. The breast will get smaller. This applies only to fat woman. Scorkes lost 11kg, her breast got smaller at the same time.

I read an article somewhere that mentioned, men and women store fat at different places in their body. And, breast and butt are some of the places that stores fat in a woman’s body.

If a woman lose weight and decreasing the total fat percentage in her body, the size of of breast will reduce proportionately at the same time because of losing fat.

correction 2 cup sizes…I work with bras, and something that not a lot of people get is cup sizing. the cup (the letter) is proportional to the band (the number/inches around under bust) SOOO: a 34B is the same size “cup” as a 32C. if you go from a 34B to 32A it is like losing 2 cup sizes worth AND 2 inches around…that is a LOT of weight loss.

PS did you know, that about 75% of women are wearing the wrong size bra?!?! for those of you not so good with numbers that means 3 of every 4 women are not wearing the right size!! this can make you boobs look bigger or smaller than they are and hurt your back. if your breasts are hurting you, you are most likely not wearing the right sized bra and you dont have disproportionally large boobs.

If they’re big, they’re big. If they’re not, so what? Small is cute too.. right? Heh heh. I know there are lotsa men out there are who will disagree, but to me – what matters most is the person that’s attached to the breasts. ;) Thanks for dropping by.
