I came across a picture of a competitive bodybuilder (he’s Malaysian) while browsing through photographs of some local Malaysian Bodybuiliding competitions. I believe this one was taken at the Mr Muscle Classic 2005 held in PWTC.
Take a look at this:

*Do you see a a beautifully sculpted physique or a terribly disproportionate shaved chicken trying hard to impress you with his muscles? Not only that.. he’s even got his posing screwed up. I don’t even know where to start.. once you’re done laughing at him, move on to the next paragraph.
I think sometimes we need to take a step back and ponder.. what exactly is Competitive Bodybuilding? Is it just blindly building whatever muscles you can and taking part in a competition.. only to make a fool of yourself? He must be totally clueless about his dilemma as it doesnt take a professional judge to tell you that something aint right about his physique.
Isn’t the guy below more pleasant to look at?

*Though he’s obviously more developed than the guy above, try to look beyond his size and notice how symmetrical and balanced his muscle development is. No oddly or over-developed muscle groups. In other words, he doesn’t look like he was brought up in a chicken farm.
Bodybuilding is not about just having admirable muscles on your body, or just having a ‘particular’ bodypart that is well developed, but I’ve always felt that bodybuilding (especially when you’re talking about Competitive Bodybuilding) is about developing a beautifully balanced physique. When this is done, symmetry is achieved, and you won’t look like a freak! (or in this case, a shaved chicken).
Then there are some who are just into it to get a little buffed up and perhaps intimidate others, or just to look good, which is fine as your goals would be different from the goals of a competitive bodybuilder. What you do at your own leisure or have in your mind may be different… you may just be going to the gym every other day wanting bigger arms and neglecting everything else, without realising that its only gonna make you look weirder. But anyway, that’s for personal satisfaction, and you’re not competing.. so fine.
But competitive bodybuilding however, is a different story. It is an ART. I think competitive bodybuilding is the exact same thing as a beauty pageant, except here, you are judging them purely on their physical appearance (you don’t have to grin as much like in a beauty pageant). I guess if it’s only for personal satisfaction or for your viewing pleasure, then it’s a different story… but this is displaying their physiques for everyone to see.. so you don’t have much room for error. Plus, some of us need to eat.
And if you turn out looking horrible like this.. don’t blame it on your genetics.. just because you’re not as proportionate as the guy next to you does not necessarily mean that you cannot work hard to bring all muscle groups into line. You can. And you MUST if you want to compete and not be humiliated on a website on the Internet. He he.
To all those who fall into the above category… with horrible proportions taking the stage.. they have my sympathy.

Hmmm…. Im not going to bitch much here coz i just might get beaten up to a pulp by any of those guys featured.
Its not that they want to… but its simply the lack of proper guidance, proper nutritioning and even than; costs. Iv spoken to quite a number of local sportsman and they all seem to bitch about the costs… Just on their cutting phase, they easily spend up to RM2,000/mth on food itself excluding supplements. Whats the prize money like? RM600 and a can of Milo… FYI, I aint kidding. I hope thru dm.com, you guys would be made aware what the local BB scene is actually like.
More support=more sponsor=more competitions=higher calibre bodybuilders
EGO is workin on that aspect and dishing out RM10k worth of prizes on the oncoming Mr. SCP competition….
Stay tuned….
Jay, u’re right on the supplement and stuff as u go hardcore. One of the many reasons why I hesitate on starting on any supplement, even on whey protein. Am already on creatine and protein(after long long consideration) and it cost me quite a bit a month. Ain’t even goin serious on my actual food intake, if u were to go for quality, it will up your daily expenditure on food significanty. So yea, not everyone can afford it. I wonder if we can deduct these costs on our income tax as sportmen expenditure TEEHEHE, heck yeah gov should do thath to also encourage a more healthy nation which is goin downhill these days on tehais overload and maggie mee goreng har har…
Jay: Well, I guess thats the priviledge of me being anonymous. So don’t go bust my cover k? Or else the next thing you know.. half of Fitness First, a few competitive bodybuilders, Miss Fitness Malaysia, and maybe even GNC will be after me! I totally agree with you, that it’s the lack awareness and all those you have mentioned… RM600 prize money? Crap!! Thats only roughly how much I spent at EGO the last time I made a purchase! They can keep their tin of Milo la. Give it to the kanak-kanak in the primary schools.
RM10,000 worth of Prizes?? Holy Cow! That oughta give the competitors a hard on la. Ha ha. Got anything for us spectators or not? Anyway.. I’ll be there for the Mr South City Plaza Bodybuilding Competition @ Seri Kembangan this Sunday, 30th April. Wouldnt wanna miss your pasar malam stall. Are you and tim gonna be in your posing trunks? Show some competition spirit la. :P
steveneleven: Though its not cheap, its also not that expensive if you think about it. Not sure.. but were you the one who was consuming a McDonalds shake after every workout to get his ‘protein’ requirements? Someone on my site was doing that, and it costs at least RM3+. A serving of protein powder (ON 100% Whey, bought at the right price), only costs RM2.07 per serving. If cost is the issue - scrape the creatine. But never scrape the protein. At the bare minimum of 2 servings per day, you’re telling me RM124/month is too much? It isnt really..
Jay : U’ve mentioned to me about the SCP competition the other day. Would love to be there and check out your booth but i’m headin off for a weekend in Bali.
DM : As you have pointed out, there is a significant difference between the two pictures and i’m sure everyone can tell what it is. I agree with what Jay says about the proper guidance and nutrition program being a major factor in it. I think i’ve bitched before about price of supplements here so i’m gonna leave that out, but what i wanna see is the government levying all this unneccessary taxes on neccessary goods. It’ll do the nation a whole lot of good IMO, u think we can hope to look forward to that in the near future?
Bwahahaha! That reminds me of some of the people I’ve seen on buses.
There was this one guy who’s pecs were soooo freaking huge. I mean seriously the were like cushions or something. His arms and shoulders were so-so lah. Big but not huge. From the sternum down however… nothing was developed. AT ALL. Talk about being totally out of proportion man….
Then there was another feller who had arms like cannons. Pecs like pillows. Shoulders like pylons. A back like a rock. Huge washboard abs… and legs like chop sticks. Take the top half of his body and you’d think he was a competition body builder. The bottom half looked like er… a malnourished kid. Hahaha maybe he’s doing year-long splits! Upper body this year, lower body next year!
IMO the first guy doesn’t have a bad body at all. Much better than the average joe. Good V-shape, prominent abs, defined pecs and arms. Admittedly his posing/stance is a bit awkward and he should build up his delts and upper arms more.
Btw, you have a very nice and informative site! Keep up the good work.
