Physical Perfection and Attraction

As I was replying a comment earlier today made by one of my readers, I was struck by a familiar thought that has been lingering on my mind over the few days.. - Our physical appearance and attraction to the opposite sex.

Coincidentally, I also heard over the radio today at 1.15pm on 104.9 FM where the deejay mentioned that ‘Getting noticed is something everyone desires’… how true that is, don’t you think? We all live in a society today where we strive so hard to be accepted. Accepted among family, among friends, among a society, university, and so on.

Speaking about acceptance draws my thoughts to physical appearance. It is indeed sad that many people today judge a person based solely on their looks before they make an attempt to get to know that person.

Human AttractionOur desires to look good are totally normal. In fact, isn’t it awesome how God created Men to be visually oriented, and then created Women with a desire in her heart to make herself beautiful.. to be pretty for someone.. even at an innocent young age? Think about it…

But when we start to obssess over beauty, the way we look, our appearance, when we start to mess with mother nature (cosmetic surgery, illegal use of anabolic steroids) and neglect every other aspect of our life… that is when things start to take an awful turn. That is when the pursuit of physical fitness crosses the line.

How far would you go? Would you go under the knife to enhance the way you look… ?

Women - would you get breast implants?
Men - would you inject yourself with anabolic steroids to accelerate the growth of your muscles?

Judging from the massive amounts of spam from my inbox.. it seems women go for breast enlargement surgery while guys go for penis elongation surgery…

Cosmetic Surgery is a BIG NO-NO to me. The only thing I ever did to alter my body is to pierce 1 hole, on each of my ears. Haha…. even decided against tatoo after a very long thought.

So far, I have not heard of anyone doing breast implant in Malaysia, well…. at least no one I know.

yes I would have considered steroids if not for its horrid side effects. But becoz of it.. I will not take steroids. Its “normal” in topday’s society of instant gratifications. Instant noodles, instant milk.. instant sex

it all boils down to the EGO

Caught this programme called “The Swan” on NTV7 (I think) the other day. This is a reality programme where they provide free cosmetic surgeries to selected persons who may be deemed as “the ones with the lesser look” (am trying to be politically correct here).

You can’t help but feel that there may be some who needs these surgeries. Not so much for us to see but more for them to feel gratified.

Well who doesn’t want to be perfect? Bodybuilder is aiming for perfection, models aim for perfection.. so why shouldn’t i? and no, i will not use steroids, i’m trying to get to my image of perfection on my own..

On the other hand, if Beauty was the Beast, I guess noone would lived happily every after.

people go against breast implants and anabolic steroids because
i) people want natural; or
ii) their risk to health?

if breast implants and anabolic steroids are 100% safe and no side effect, will our view change?

i don’t think guys really need anabolic steroids to look good. but for competitive bodybuilder, it may be necessary to break through their genetic limitation.

Sir /Mam,

It has been almost a year I stop weight training. I wish to start over again with a new mindset to achieve my personal goal. I’ ve been train in Bodybuilding for about 5 years before I take an OFF.
FYI, my bodyweight is now 95kgs( FAT I Guess ). What is your recommendation to me either to losse some weight first or go straight PUMPING IRON?

eksk: Yeah.. I think I can make the same conclusion too. But I wonder.. how real it is in this country? Any idea?

psharlene: There’s this woman at FF Menara Axis who is very HIGH on the breast implants suspected list. You of course.. don’t need implants.

steveneleven: Yeah, but many people ignore the side effects and enter the ‘dark side’ of bodybuilding anyway. And how does your thought go from food to sex in an instant? If you were talking about melted chocolate and whip cream.. I think I can understand… but instant noodles?

Jay: Yeap, you summed up my entire writeup into a single word - Ego. I must admit, that I’m sometimes full of it myself.

izyz: Thats an interesting point you bring up. Yes, there is gratification for those who undergo the procedure.. But how I look at it.. is that we were all created beautiful and acceptable in the first place.. so, having to change something, especially when its artificially done, is somewhat like messing with God’s design for us.. dont you think? I think naturally altering your physique (exercise) is simply perfecting and taking care of what we’ve been entrusted with - our bodies, which is an awesome thing to do. But when we artificially mess with it… hmm… it just seems wrong. Just my opinion.

sinister: Yes - aiming for perfection is something I strongly believe in.. and doing it out of your own blood and sweat.. priceless!

Hafiz Hector: Ashlee’s in a world where sadly, cosmetic surgery is a must (of course its really not).. so.. the girl’s probably under so much pressure that she just had to. Not saying its right.. but its just a pity to see that someone whos been blessed with talent, beauty and wealth has to resort to something like this.

T+1: Great point. I know that my views wont change.. but I sure bet you’d be seeing lots and lots of perky chests and Johnny Bravo lookalikes.

Reynold G: Its awesome that you’ve decided to start again, and you’ve set yourself a goal! Well done - thats half the battle won! I’d recommend what I recommend to everyone (both male & female) who wants to lose bodyfat - Weight train AND do your cardio to lose weight faster and more effectively. These two complement eachother.

Dm: ah I was just trying to express the INSTANT society that is us today. We all want instant results, like how to get six pack abs in 3 weeks, GIMME a BREAK. oh your point in not messing with our body, what about genetic engineering? perhaps being able to cure cancer by genetically manipulate the human gene, is that the same to you then? where do we draw the line? And if u were to argue that it is for good cause for curing cancer, so is cosmestic surgery for those who choose to, perhaps to elevate their sense of confidence, get better jobs, etc. sEEMS TO ME its all relative. Indeed, let us have a LIVE forum on this via SKYPE! heeeeeeeeeeeeeey,,…. I wonder if we can do shit like that!!! have a forum over skype record it and podcast it.. wouldn’t that be smashing! We would need a moderator tho… OK I digress yet again.. bye bye

steveneleven: Live forum via skype? Id rather attach you to an olympic bar and benchpress you bro.. via a live videocast. Wouldnt that be more fun?

I appreciate the things you said about men and women. When I was in sixth grade I decided i needed to have a perfect physical body? I started a strict excercise and eating routine. I became so obsessed about it that I became very skinny. Hardly eating anything and excercising all the time. I didnt enjoy it but I did it because I guess I felt I had to. Any explanation as to why a person would do this?

I think the song “Unpretty” by TLC would describe the pressure people feel in looking pretty and the extend they will go to for it. When I was younger I had a lot of issues accepting myself for just who I am. But as I grow older, I realise that there are many things that are more important that physical appearance, which will fade with age. Now, I have ‘real’ friends & relationships, people with goodness in their hearts whom I took the trouble to get to know and do not judge regardless of looks (who in the other hand accept me for who I am). I will not change that ‘richness’ I have for the world. To be honest, sometimes, I even purposely dress down- because I find it’s a good trick to eliminate ’superficial’ people ;)
