Are You Blaming Your Income Level For Your Poor Diet?

by Noel Chelliah on Wednesday, Jul 18, 2007

Poor Diet, ObesityJunk food diets and unhealthy lifestyle not dependent on wealth, says study.

The Low Income Nutrition and Diet Survey carried out between November 2003 and January 2005 studied the dietary habits of 3728 people who were in the bottom 15% of the population in terms of material deprivation.

Their diet-related problems were similar to those of the wider population. These included low fruit and vegetable consumption, not eating enough oily fish and eating too much saturated fat and sugar.

Obesity levels were also “very high” – but this was in line with the UK population as a whole. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of the women questioned were overweight or obese, compared with 62% of men, 35% of boys and 34% of girls.

Poor Diet Is A Matter Of Choice, Not Income Levels

Now, the first person that came to mind when I read this piece of news was my Gym Instructor, who took care of the first gym I stepped foot into, many years ago. I had the chance to meet him about a year ago – and he was in disappointing shape. For someone who was pretty well built before, he’s only HALF the size he is now, and he blames it all on the fact that he can’t afford supplements anymore, and therefore, that is why he is in such shape.

FIRSTLY – Supplements are NOT a must in this world of bodybuilding and fitness.
SECONDLY – It was his poor food choices that led him to such a disappointing state.
THIRDLY – It’s not easy telling the above to your Gym Instructor, especially when you were once his ‘student’.

is he this guy?
“It was my first day at the gym which was the turning point for me – the instructor actually lifted my t-shirt up and revealed my fat stomach in front of the people there and in a way, embarrassed me. I’ll never forget that day. And I cannot thank him enough.”

if so… then how ironical is our life!

T+1… Similar situation happened when I started gymming a couple of years back… Have since been on a slow weight loss programme, good to see that my belly is now flat, just have to work at getting the much desired 6 packs. Slowly, but surely…

Syd: Haha.. well, the only thing he was on was a multivitamin and a protein shake. He got the rest from food, I’m pretty sure.

T+1: Yes! That’s him!

1) Look at the type of food they eat and how much it cost em

2) Look at them

Sometimes we have a larger than life memory of our old sifu, especially when we were once thin and small. I went back to the first gym I started in and found my old sifu much smaller and shorter than I remember.

Yu Jin: Hmm.. I never really thought of it that way, but yeah.. you’re right. I’m sure that adds to the effect. I had not seen him for 5 years easily, and it is during those years that I gained my experience and grew physically. Thanks for dropping by!

emm, my 2 cents over here. Right now if i am assuming that supplement is a MUST. I believe there are always be alternatives. If we look on the ingredients on those supplements, eg Caffeine Anhydrous, Green Tea Extract, Naringin (available part from the fat burner) etc all those funny chemical name. So can i say that those chemicals stuff the manufacturers also getting those supply from wholesale. Maybe your instructor can try to figure out how to get those wholesale supply and mix it up for himself. I believe it must be much much cheaper to get those supplement from the manufacturer eg BSN, Muscletech. People are always like that, when something is expensive, always assume is good. But actually if we can figure how to get those chemical stuff and mix the things ourself, it should be very cheap. Maybe any science performance background students can comment about this? :)
