A Career in the Fitness Industry is About Heart Selling

While browsing around for a new career last night, I came across this recruitment ad by a gym chain in Malaysia.

gym recruitment ad

Pay special notice to the remuneration offered for the
1 - Membership Consultants - RM2,000 (approx US$580)
2 - Fitness Instructors/Personal Trainers - RM1,700 (approx US$500)

Put the commissions aside… there are no prizes for guessing what the main drive and focus of this gym is. RECRUITMENT!

Say what you want - Perhaps you may even say that I can’t really blame them, as they’ve got a business to run, but it’s a shame that the management decides to invest their money in people whose main job scope is to RECRUIT new members, instead of investing it in the people who will be responsible for transforming the lives and the future of their members. We need to wake up and realise that a career in this industry is not about hard selling.. but HEART selling.

The only thing I like about the ad is where they mention that they require a passion to motivate members on their goals. At least they got something right! But how many of us here in Malaysia know of many Personal Trainers of THAT caliber today? They are a rare breed, and it is sad to see that the fitness giants don’t seem to be doing much to nurture and invest in what I believe to be fundamental to the success of the gym.

It is my dream, that one day, every one of you, including myself, would be a catalyst to inspire such a change.

Happy 50th Malaysia!

DM, Happy Merde.. ah screw it, I’m not even a 1st class citizen yet. I don’t feel too proud of a country with embarassing shenanigans either.

Anyway, is that “hard selling” or “heart selling”?

I think the natural progression is that with such fierce competition, hopefully there will be a point when gyms will realize that they can’t retain members if the personal trainers and amenities are not up to scratch.

Just like how China was a repressive regime who abuse human rights, now with globalization, it is arguable that they are more corruption-free than Malaysia! (Of course, death punishment for corruption might have something to do with it). In the same vein, hopefully the bodoh country governors can see that if they stop shooting their own feet, we can all play catch up to Singapore and South Korea, regardless of race or religion.

i truly believe that a gym (or fitness centre.. whatever they call it these days) should invest on proper training and maintaining a great crew of trainers..

great trainers that knows and cares about the progress and target of clients, those are the ones i’m talking about. If your trainers are good, people would always talk.. and good word travels fast.. people would come, and most likely to STAY at that particular gym if the service provided is top notch.

i have seen too many PTs around the gym and i cannot express any lower of i feel about them. 99% of them are incompetent. most of them are acting like a bunch of boys recently turned into puberty, just doing their job, and shows no passion at all. some PTs, while training their client, was actually doing some SMS and scouting for other female members while his client is in the middle of some repetition lifts. aren’t they supposed to spot and give full attention to their client?

i feel sorry for that client, to have wasted his money on such bull.

this is the result of such competitive atmosphere on the local scene. the true colours shows… the big chains are in it for the MONEY.. not your health people…. try surfing around various forums and there are grouses on every one of the big chains…
