She Gained Weight at a Slimming Centre

by Noel Chelliah on Friday, Sep 5, 2008

I couldn’t believe what I read in the papers today. “She gained weight — at a slimming centre“. Then again.. why am I not surprised?

The report talks of a slimming centre in Johor Baru, Malaysia, that was ordered to refund the money (RM12,670) paid by a woman named Kavitha who gained 0.2kg of weight after undergoing 10 slimming sessions there.

Poor Kavitha. I truly feel sorry for her – it’s not her fault. I’m sure her intentions were good, and all she wanted to do was to lose some weight – not too much to ask right? And the price that she was willing to pay tells you how badly she wanted this. And in the end.. what did she get? A 0.2 kg souvenir from the slimming centre she can carry with her 24/7.

It is a mockery to the entire Fitness Industry and to Personal Trainers like me when a ‘beautician’ starts to tell you what to do in order to get into shape, and even ‘prescribes/recommends’ products to help speed weightloss.

In my opinion, in today’s mature society which knows the importance and the benefits of exercise – slimming centres should be BANNED. Their phony advertisements with touched-up images of slender women needs to be BANNED as well – and what does it take for this to become a reality? Does someone need to die in the hands of a ‘beautician’ first? Or perhaps if the authorities fail to take action – all the women who have undergone treatment and gained back those pounds should rally together and burn these centres down. Since they can’t burn the fat – just burn the centres down.

I hope we know now that slimming centres are NOT an option to weightloss. I’d be seriously disappointed if any one of my readers were to go for any of their weightloss treatments – cos that would mean that I’ve failed on my part to a certain extent.

In order for us to have successful and PERMANENT weightloss (yes… permanent IS possible) – we need lifestyle change – not an easy way out like slimming centres or an overnight solution like Liposuction. These may work – but only temporarily. We need to change the things we put in our mouth, change our daily habits (increase physical activity), and realise, taste, and see the transformation that a healthier lifestyle can bring you. If there’s no change in lifestyle – you will very quickly add those pounds back again. I guarantee it.

On the other hand – for RM12,670 – I’d give you 20 personal training sessions, cook meals for you, and at the very end – buy you that gorgeous, flattering outfit you never thought you could fit into. All inclusive and part of the package. Now how does that sound to you?

well, is common actually. i meet with few gym members who actually pay rm10000+++ plus but only lose 0.5kg. when the member trying to ask why the result was so different from what the slimming centre promise and the centre will end up point the finger back to the client say is thier lifestyle problem example didn`t control thier foods.

MY ADVICE : pls pls pls ,, to lose weight is not something can happen in one day times. pls put in some effort in it. emphasize on using exercises to be the best way to lose weight. perweek healthy losing weight (fat) should be only around 0.5kg till 1kg where it will not lead to loss of muscle or cause too much stress to the body ya..

get a certified trainer to help u through the process to achieve the goal. its a totally different experiences and result in achieving your lose weight goal ( pls emphasize on losing fat.. NOt losing muscle mass )

fire up pls everyone who want to lose weight.. set yourself a realistic goal and start take action toward achieving your goal. only action will bring u to your goal..

DON~T GIVE UP.. IS THE MATTER OF TIME + EFFORT + WILLINGNESS to change unhealthy lifestyle..

This is what I keep telling my wife! You will lose weight ONLY if Calories Burned > Calories Consumed. So you have to eat less, excercise more, or both. There is no short cut! I think slimming centres cause you to lose fluids to give an illusion of being slimmer.

By the way, which is a better workout order in a gym – aerobics followed by weight training or the other way around? I’m a silent reader of this blog … this is my 1st post!

Alfonto: 16kg? Wow.. well done!! And thanks.

Rambo: Yes, it’s easy to induce fluid loss and make the customer ‘think’ they’ve lost weight. Well yeah, actually they have lost weight.. but not the kind of weight they want to.

By the way, I’ve answered your question on my latest post: Cardio or Weight Training – Which comes First?

I really feel sorry for this lady.Hope women who are reading this blog go back to the fundamental being physically active. Most women put on weight after child birth and due to family commitment they neglect themselves.Hope women will find time (which is not easy) to workout (some gym hv childcare centre to leave the kids there until u finish workout). To mothers to be, breastfeed yr baby, guarentee to lose weight. I am the living proof.
To all overweight women don’t despair, just find the right physical activity u enjoy and go for it.Don’t forget don’t diet but eat moderately.Good luck to all women who are trying to lose weight.

Bengbeng: Yes exactly – it’s a lifestyle change. Sadly, most people don’t have the patience, and just want a quick fix.

Hi DM,
Like Alfonto, Ive spent at least 13k on hiring a personal trainer.. Its the tremendous results that keeps me renewing my training packages : A more and more defined [read: hot] body each day, my self-esteem is sky high [I look and feel much better now than i did 20 years ago], agility and better health [ Im an asthmatic]. The best thing is I can still enjoy the food that I like and stay slim. Im fitter than my colleagues who are way younger than I am. I appreciate myself more now and how I wish Ive started earlier. My PT is correct : I will get everything if I exercise…This is the best 13k I spent and I dont mind spending more. Its an investment for my old life. So to all women who wish to change the way they look, my advice is : hit the gym and lift those weights [plus determination, discipline and committment].. youll get more than what you expect…What do you think DM?

happyclient: I like where you say your self-esteem is sky high – one of the many benefits of exercise that money can’t buy. I have a female client who is 58 years old – and I’d boldly say that she too would not be where she is today in life or as successful if not for her commitment to exercise. She has more energy in her than some of my 30+ year old male clients!

I love this post and couldn’t agree more.

Wish more of my girlfriends and more girls altogether could realize this. When adviced on working out and taking care of what they put in their mouth, we always get, “I hate sweating!” or “errrr, but Double Whopper tastes soooooooo good.”

Pathetic.

They think expensive make-up and handbags can make them live longer, and look OVERALL better? Bodies like Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba (pre or post-pregnancy) don’t come by sitting on their asses and eating chips all day!

Ninie: Everyone needs to reach their ‘turning-point’ I guess – we can’t do it for them.. no matter how badly we want to.
