Eat Pasta… Carefully
By Dr. John Berardi

As a God-fearing Italian, I have to admit that I love pasta. But, as a gut-fearing weight lifter and athlete, I definitely have to choose the lower GI, nutrient dense whole-wheat variety. During training phases that require or allow for higher carbohydrate intake (higher volume training) I’ll eat one whole-wheat pasta meal per day. During other phases (like where I’m trying to lose fat), the pasta stays on the shelf in favor of a higher lean protein, good fat, and fruit and veggie intake.

I try to only eat pasta right before/ after a workout. But as a student the cheapness of pasta is sometimes too strong to ignore despite my best efforts

Yes, it’s cheap, and certainly better than most other rubbish we sometimes stuff ourselves with. But depending on our goals… sometimes pasta, especially when we misjudge portion sizes can have the daily calorie consumption add up really quickly.

I found your blog and love it! I too, love pasta and just can’t give it up. Now that I am much more serious about my health and fitness goals, i limit myself to about one pasta meal a week. I do choose, and prefer the whole wheat pasta, 1. because is it more filling and 2. it keeps me fuller longer. Also, I always load up my pasta with veggies so I don’t have that tired, sluggish feeling afterwards.

Bengbeng: No I have not done a review on Hydroxycut before. Yes the results can be stunning on some, but people are different, and everyone can react differently to it. Also, like you said - it’s not exactly that cheap - I’d rather spend that money on buying great food that would help with the weightloss, and do it the natural way. Our bodies are capable of a lot you know… :). Sorry for the late reply, I didn’t realise you posted that comment.

malaysian: Weight gain is actually very simple logic - As long as you consume more calories than you expend/use up, you WILL gain weight. That is LAW, and will never change. If you are eating plenty, and still can’t gain weight - you just ain’t eating enough!

Christina: Thanks for the kind words - glad you like what you read here. Everything in moderation, is okay. Pasta is quite calorie-dense, and therefore many people tend to underestimate the number of calories they consume, and often go overboard with the serving sizes as well. Like you, I too prefer whole wheat pasta. Don’t forget your serving of protein, so that it’s a well balanced meal. Thanks for stopping by!
