Think Green… Green Tea

If you’re a fan of Oprah, you would have caught a few shows where Dr. Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. shares on ways you can reverse aging through diet, exercise and lifestyle changes you can easily practice.

I have all my clients who come to me make this one change. And today, I’d like to share this tip with you, my fellow reader, one of the many tips I’ve gathered from listening to Dr. Oz, and occasionally flipping through some of his books.

While most of us Malaysians still turn to Milo or Horlicks as our comforting hot drink, or the more unhealthy Teh-tarik… there is a better hot beverage out there - Green Tea!

Green tea isn’t something that you should drink only when you’re in a Japanese restaurant.

Green tea has been shown to have the highest content of polyphenols, which are chemicals with potent antioxidant properties (believed to be greater than even vitamin C). They give tea its bitter flavor. Because green tea leaves are young and have not been oxidized, green tea has up to 40 percent polyphenols, while black tea contains only about 10 percent.

Another interesting fact is that Green tea has only one-third the caffeine of black tea but has been shown to yield the same level of excitement and attentiveness, but in more even levels than the ups and downs associated with other caffeinated drinks. Just don’t drink milk with it, as the casein in milk has been shown to inhibit the beneficial effects of tea.

Dr. Oz suggests up to four cups of green a day. Do check out my Super Shake - which is one easy way to get some green tea (and loads of goodness) into your daily diet. I also prefer Japanese Green Tea, instead of the local Boh green tea (from Cameron Highlands) you can get here - it just doesn’t taste the same (doesn’t have the same bitterness).

Making changes to your diet are not as difficult as we think. One of the most powerful ways in which you can change your eating habits is to simply start eating mindfully - pay attention to the foods you stock in your kitchen, the foods you buy at the supermarket - and the foods you put in your mouth.

Many of us eat the way we eat today because of long-term conditioning and habit from our younger days - as a result, we often reach for what we’re used to having and we eat it unconsciously, regardless if it is good for us or not. Think about that.

But for now, think Green. :)

It just hits me after reading this post that although I’ve always enjoyed green tea I never bothered to stock up on the stuff at the office, choosing instead to enjoy it when I’m having a meal at a sushi restaurant.

Duh….

Will make sure I buy a box and put it in the office after this.

Yes, green tea rules. I drink about 2-3 cups per day and love it for it’s health and fitness benefits! DM, I noticed we drink the same brand, from OSK Japan.

I prefer Japanese green tea as opposed to the ones from China. In my experience, China green tea has a sour and unpleasant aftertaste. Japanese green tea has a slightly milder and cleaner taste =)

Same brand here as well. I’ve tried others, including BOH and Dilmah, somehow i presefer the taste of OSK. Though in terms of tatste, nothing beats the tea leaves itself though you have non of the convenience of a tea bag, so OSK wins it for me.

I agree, green tea is really good for you.
Dr Oz actually also mentioned that white tea is the absolute best and it’s also brewed fresh - but I have no idea where to get this.
Green tea works just as well and even black tea is good although not as…

Hi, I’m a new reader and been going thru your old articles for the past few days. Anyways, I’m a huge fan of green tea…but with milk. Matcha iced blended (sometimes with latte) always makes me go insane, but it contains high sugar & decreases the beneficial effects of green tea as you mentioned ey?
