California Fitness sells Fitness Clubs in Malaysia – Jackie Chan gives way for Amber Chia

by Noel Chelliah on Tuesday, Sep 8, 2009

If you guys haven’t already heard… California Fitness just recently announced that it has sold its three fitness clubs in Malaysia (Mid Valley Megamall, Sunway Pyramid and Lot 10) to Celebrity Fitness.

From BERNAMA:

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 (Bernama) — California Fitness, the leading fitness company in Asia, Thursday announced that it has sold its three fitness clubs in Malaysia to Celebrity Fitness.

The three clubs are located in Mid Valley Megamall, Sunway Pyramid and Lot 10.

The California Fitness Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of 24-Hour Fitness Worldwide, continues to own and operate its mYoga club at The Gardens shopping mall.

“We believe that this transaction provides the optimal solution for both staff and members,” said its President, Colin Heggie in a statement here Thursday.

“The move will allow the company to realign resources and reinforce its growth and focus in the markets where it is an industry leader. The company is committed to maintaining its brand leadership in the fitness market in Asia,” Heggie said.

Currently, California Fitness operates 22 clubs in Asia, including 10 in Hong Kong, six in Taiwan, four in Singapore and two in mainland China which offers a wide range of features and amenities to help members live better through fitness.

California Fitness opened its first club in Malaysia in 2005 and has since grown in popularity amongst members who are seeking a genuinely world-class fitness experience.

Meanwhile, 24-Hour Fitness Worldwide, serves more than three million members and has partnered superstar athletes and celebrities like Lance Armstrong, Shaquille O’Neal, Andre Agassi, Magic Johnson, Jackie Chan and Derek Jeter to open co-branded clubs around the world.

My thoughts

To be honest, I’m actually just glad that California Fitness didn’t choose to ‘shut down’ like what Yoga Zone did – and leave their members hanging. A consolidation of the health clubs simply means good news to all people – MORE health clubs at new locations, ultimately making fitness more accessible to the public, and giving added value to existing members. In my opinion, this, in turn, will cause the other clubs to buck up and improve their services – or risk losing their existing members to a new ‘rising star’.

Yes, it actually seems like Jackie Chan's biceps are no match for Amber Chia's non-existent muscles (see below).

Move over Jackie Chan, I guess Amber Chia has more 'muscle' than you after all.

Yes heard about this. And I’m still with Fitness First! I wonder why? FF does not seem to want to lower their monthly fees despite competition from other health clubs!

Jackie Chan is a celebrity. So it makes sense that Jackie Chan is bought over by Celebrity fitness =P

I own a California’s infinity membership and i suppose to have access to all California clubs in this region. Now, i need to convert / downgrade my membership to celebrity fitness’s ALL CLUB membership which only have access to Malaysia only!

I have learned a good lesson, all fitness clubs are just a con after all! I bet few years down the road, Celebrity fitness will be sold to some other fitness company!

Thanks Jacky Chan, you did a good con job!

Infinity Member – thanks for sharing. That sucks, what happened to you. Reminds me of all the frustrated Yogazone members who had the club shut down on them!

See that’s why I’ll never fall for “International” or “Infinity” membership for a premium price. You’ll never know if 1. your lifestyle has inevitably changed, and 2. the company still survives.

Yes – never buy a long term membership. There are proven statistics that indicate at least 50% of those who start a workout routine/purchase a gym membership will quit within the first 6 months. These gyms are counting on you to buy their lifetime or long-term memberships and give-up halfway. That’s why Fitness First, for example, under the wing of IHRSA (http://www.ihrsa.org) actually protects the interest of the members by not offering such memberships for sale in the first place. :)

Why dont they branch out to JB lah. We only have Clatch and Hatch . The rest is a dirty , unprofessional gym run by some retired bodybuilding constestant . The potential here is really big. The aerobic class in Clatch are full with student , you cant hardly stand. Bring First Fitness here. I am sure it will do well

infinity still valid for worldwide membership dude. only in Malaysia it is converted to celebrity fitness (thought their worker’s standard really sux now) therefore the infinity card you can still use if you go abroad

Been to the one in Mid Valley last year. Awesome concept. And true, it’s better to see them sell than shut down.
