I couldn’t resist doing this… this is a photo of a Personal Trainer from a gym here in Malaysia (which I shall not name) which appeared in a local newspaper a couple of days ago. It shows a trainer demonstrating a stretching technique with a client.
So dear readers – in true dailymuscle.com style… let me ask you a question… Who, in your opinion, is the trainer? Is it the overweight guy on the left, or the fitter and leaner looking gentleman on the right? (My regular readers who understand my sense of humour by now would already know the answer!)

*UPDATE – 23rd Nov 2009: The survey received 85 responses, out of which, 27 people guessed that the person on the right is the trainer (that’s 31.8%). The only reason that anyone would guess the person on the right is the trainer, is because he looked fitter than the person on the left – but who would have guessed… that the trainer is actually the guy on the LEFT. 31% of people making a wrong guess is quite a large number.
Which goes to prove, that as a trainer… you need to look the part. So as harsh as I may sometimes be… for the sake of your career and for the sake of inspiring others – that means no saggy butt, no bulging tummy, no love handles. It’s not like you need to have a six-pack… but at least, look fit, ‘cos you are actually a role model to your client, even if they don’t say it to you. So the next time I write a blog post like this one “Is your Group Exercise Instructor on the chubby side?“, then there would be no need for everyone to get upset with me… :-)

i observed another case in the gym which related to Personal Trainer. I was doing my weight training, at the same time observed this PT. She was training the client on abs exercise. The client was struggling to come up with her neck instead of abs… the PT just didn’t correct the position instead she kept pushing the client to work more and fast. Just don’t know when the client neck will break :p
Errrrr…. no offense but some PT really not qualified to be PT.
TZ: Maybe we saw the same PT in action? I saw one at the gym doing exactly as you described. To think that people dump their hard earned money for good-for-nothing PTs like these. Tsk tsk.
@Aizan, people will dump their money for one simple reason – lack of fitness knowledge. They pay to PT because they believe them, trust that they can gain some knowledge from them.
I still see a lot of fat personal trainers in my gym. But even worse than that, i know people who have been going to a certain personal trainer for 2 years and still no improvement to their body. They look the same as they did when the first joined.
Tomasz: That’s exactly my point. People hire PTs to gain knowledge but when they’re unwittingly stuck with bad ones, they receive almost nothing in return for the money spent for these trainers in the first place.
Rajan: It’s interesting that they still work with the trainer – oh well.. some people hire trainers just to ensure they get a good workout, and are not really bothered about results or changing anything else in their life.
Sounds surprising, but there are people who are just happy with that – that’s the only reason I can think of why someone who doesn’t show results for 2 years still keep’s the trainer. A client once told me… that sometimes… people just want someone to ‘talk’ to… someone who will listen to them – and I believe that trainers get that often.
