How To Make A Healthy Dessert (One You Won’t Regret Eating)

by Noel Chelliah on Thursday, Apr 1, 2010

A couple of days ago, I touched on how desserts can actually be ‘healthy’ if you were to put the right things in it. I also shared an unbelievable dessert cookbook with you (can be downloaded for free). If you missed yesterday’s post, “Can A Dessert Be Healthy? Fitness First Dessert Night – Potluck @ The Curve“, then read it here.

So while on the topic of desserts – I must confess, that I do have a sweet tooth, and a soft spot for desserts – but of course, everything in moderation. You see… I’m human too – with wants and desires just like most of you.

Over time, I’ve learned how to better incorporate them into my diet without doing as much ‘damage’ – for example, I tell my clients this all the time – if they MUST have a piece of cake/dessert/something sugary – the best time for that would be after their workout, preferably within 3 hours, since carbohydrate tolerance is best within that 3-hour window. But don’t take this piece of advice wrongly now – I’m not saying that you should eat desserts after your workout – but if you MUST, and you’re absolutely CRAVING to have something, then the best time would be post-workout. Understood?

Now I’m no chef, but one seriously good dessert that hits the spot for me is something I make pretty often – it is a simple combination of Yogurt and protein powder. Yeah.. it’s a no-brainer, and it goes like this:

The No-Brainer Yogurt Dessert @ ‘Mock Cheesecake’

Ingredients:
1. Greek-style Yogurt (plain, unsweetened)
While any plain unsweetened yogurt would do, I personally find that Greek Style yogurt works best due to its texture – it’s almost impossible to believe that what you’re eating isn’t bad for you at all.

2. Your Favourite Protein Powder
In my example below, I use Nitro-Tech Hardcore Pro-Series simply because it has unbelievable taste (strawberry) – and you’ll find that if you use the ‘Cookies and Cream’ flavour, the end result very closely resembles an Oreo Cheesecake – I kid you not!! But of course, you’re free to use what you like.

And believe me – Strawberry rocks! Nothing feminine about it.

Method:
- Add 1 scoop of protein powder into an empty bowl
- Add 2 – 3 few heaping tablespoons of the yogurt into the bowl
- Stir until powder is dissolved/mixed evenly
- Enjoy!

Actually what I’m doing is I’m just ‘flavouring’ the Yogurt – but with a difference.

I also know someone who does this with Cottage cheese instead of the Yogurt – but I’d rather not go there today. Or maybe ever. It just doesn’t sound right to me.

Like I said, this recipe is a no-brainer, and the taste is pretty mind-blowing considering how simple it is to make. Of course, the outcome will depend on the protein powder you use. So if you use a crap protein powder, then your dessert is going to taste like crap. I’ve tried many, but the ones I personally feel produce the best tasting desserts are:

1. Nitro-Tech Hardcore Pro-Series (Strawberry and Cookies & Cream)
2. Universal Ultra Iso-Whey (Tropical Punch)
3. Ultimate Nutrition Protein Sensation (Chocolate Truffle)

Don’t these flavours just make your mouth water? If you’re in Malaysia, all of these are available at Egonutritions.com as well. Or if you order more than a tub via bodybuilding.com, you may be able to get a better rate.

So give today’s recipe a shot – and remember – even though this is far superior than your typical dessert in terms of nutrition, too much of it can be detrimental towards your fitness goals. Everything in moderation.

Or you could make yogurt parfait with it, greek yogurt, strawberries, kiwi or mango, greek yogurt, then a granola of your choice. Better yet, make the granola yourself.
Hey, have you tried banana softserve? You could use frozen bananas, pulse it on the food processor. Voila! You’ve got soft serve banana. I have yet to try them though. But I hear it’s like the real deal.

Wilson: Village Grocer, and Bangsar Village. I’ve also seen them at Cold Storage before. But they usually run out really fast everywhere.

Michelle: Nope, never tried… cos the truth is I don’t fancy bananas… hehe.

Adib: Village Grocer. And buy 2 tubs cos they last really long.
P.S. – How have you been?

Juno (Rajan, of Fitness Malaysia), I find it most unprofessional of you to leave a comment like that on my blog.

If you’re wondering why you are banned from commenting on my site, it is simply because you never seem to contribute anything positive & are really only interested in pointing out a flaw or perceived problem.

Sorry but I won’t tolerate this – not on my blog.

It is sad that you seem to view me as a threat to your business, rather than an opportunity to work together to help people.
