I was having a brief chat with Malaysian radio legend Shazmin Shamsuddin just yesterday, sharing with her on how working with a Personal Trainer to help you with your fitness goals can actually turn out to be a life-changing experience (and not torture sessions like some people believe it to be).
A personal trainer can not only impact a client physically via exercise, but also the client’s behaviour, daily lifestyle decisions, and even mindset.
At times, a great trainer would not only be able to directly impact his/her client, but even indirectly alter the habits of those who are in contact with that client – for example the family, best friend, and colleagues of the client.
I don’t know about you, but that’s powerful stuff – and totally rewrites what many people think the roles of a Personal Trainer are.
Whoever you may be – accomplished CEO, busy executive, housewife, teenager or athlete, working with a Personal Trainer can help you improve your ‘game’ – the word game here not only referring to a physical sport, but also your work, studies, and fitness goals.
On a lighter note and in an attempt to illustrate my point, here are…
Some ‘trainers‘ you might recognise
Alfred, legal guardian and ‘mentor’ to Batman (Bruce Wayne)

Mickey Goldmill and Rocky – Rocky would have been nothing if Mickey did not step in and made a heavyweight champion out of him.
Morpheus - he helped Neo realize his potential as the most important being in the history of the universe.
Yoda and Luke Skywalker – This funny talking ‘trainer’, Yoda picks up the slacking Luke Skywalker and makes him the greatest Jedi that ever lived.
And last but not least – who can miss:
Mr Miyagi and the Karate Kid – he is the total package – trainer, bodyguard, handyman, teacher, father figure, employer, cook, and bonsai tree pruner, transforming a nerdy little boy to become an honorable and disciplined kid you wouldn’t want to pick a fight with.
A Mentor for Everyone – Me Included
Whatever your goals are, and cost, crappy trainer and poor gym facilities aside – the fact remains that everyone can benefit having a mentor/personal trainer/coach.
I’ve worked under the guidance of a handful of great trainers over the past couple of years. Since January 2010, I’ve had the privilege of working with a new mentor, none other than the much respected Dr. John M Berardi, PhD, CSCS. Read more about my current mentor, JB, here.
Of course, the past 4 months have been very costly – but nevertheless, the knowledge gained so far and the application of what I’ve learned has already far outweighed the cost of working with him and it has been a great investment into my business, running a Personal Training service.
Even Olympic athletes work with a coach. No matter how awesome your fitness levels may be, how much you have known about your body, health, and fitness – you can certainly breathe new life into your current routine by getting a mentor.
Do you guys have a life-changing experience with a coach/trainer/mentor that you’d like to share?
I’d REALLY love to hear from you – just drop a comment below.
