Why I Recommend Fish Oil for A Successful Body Transformation

by Noel Chelliah on Tuesday, Jan 17, 2012

A good nutritional intake is vital for improved overall physiological function and for any body transformation process. Which is why all my 1-on-1 clients and participants at my Body Transformation Camp get very important lessons and support to ‘fix’ their nutritional habits.

In fact, when it comes to fat loss, nutritional intake is MORE important than exercise (doesn’t mean you don’t exercise – but it means you pay more attention to your food, while maintaining a decent exercise program).

Today I’d like to touch on one supplement I consider to be ‘essential’ and suitable for regular use  - one that a lot of people consume, but probably aren’t doing it right, or aren’t sure of the benefits it has for them.

I’d like to introduce you to…

Fish Oil

Salmon Oil contains oil only from the Salmon Fish. Most other 'Fish Oils' contain a mixture of fishes. But it isn't a problem, they all work well.

Fish oil is basically oil, from fish (kinda obvious right?)

It is rich in two specific groups of omega-3 fatty acids known as DHA and EPA, and this is what makes fish oil beneficial to us.

The whole food equivalent of fish oil supplements are fatty fish such as cod, salmon, anchovy (not very common here except in fried form which I don’t suggest!), and sardines. So if you aren’t eating much of these fishes, chances are high you stand to really benefit from fish oil supplementation.

Benefits of Fish Oil

Fish Oil, being rich in Omega-3s are important for:

  • heart/cardiovascular function
  • nervous system function
  • brain development
  • immune system health

Since we’re looking at Body Transformation, then it’s probably interesting to learn that Omega-3s, DHA and EPA can also:

  • increase metabolism (I know many people who start to SWEAT so much more when they exercise after supplementing with fish oil).
  • increase levels of enzymes that boost calorie-burning ability (which ramps up your metabolism)
  • help muscle cells become more sensitive to insulin, and the body to divert more nutrients to muscle tissue
  • assist in cell repair and regeneration

How to Take Fish Oil for Maximum Benefit

  • Take it with meals, every day
  • A good dose to see real benefit is between 6 – 12 grams of total fish oil per day (1 g is usually 1 capsule – but check the label to be sure). 1 capsule per day just won’t work.
  • Both liquid or capsule forms are fine (liquids are often cheaper, but harder to find)
  • I suggest also buying capsules from a reputable company, such as GNC because some supplement companies put lower-quality oil into capsules (or secretly sell you soy oil!). Buy from a reputable company.

IMPORTANT:

  1. Fish body oils are different from oils from the liver of the fish, which can be toxic in large amounts. The supplement I’m writing about in this blog post is Fish Oil – NOT Fish Liver Oil (e.g. Cod Liver Oil, etc).
  2. Fish Oil is generally safe, UNLESS you’re on blood thinning medication

When you successfully master better eating habits, and feed your body the nutrients it craves, you’ll be able to feel the difference. Addressing your Omega-3 intake is an easy way to get started, and to be consistent, and it is one of the essential supplements we can all make part of our everyday consumption.

So I hope that now you know why I’m really big on Fish Oil. In fact, it is the First Coaching Lesson we send out to all participants who start at the Transformation Camp, and it is an easy habit to follow.

So don’t just read this post – take my advice, and do it!

Then let me know how you feel after a couple of weeks.

Drop me a comment below if you’d like to discuss.

In health,

Coach Noel

Hanafiah, yes that is correct. I’d say minimum 6g per day to get the benefits.

Hi Noel,

Are there any side effects if over consumed? Or does the quantity correlate back to one’s weight? i.e. does a heavy suited individual have to consume more fish oil simply because he is at greater risk of getting health issues than one at an optimum weight category..please clarify. thanks!

I’ve had people take up to 30 ml megadoses per day, with no side effects. However, sticking to the 6-12g per day is a good start, regardless of your size.

Hi Noel

Been meaning to ask you this-Fish Oil and Fat lost. I heard a lot about it.
Increase metabolism which boost calorie burning ability.. I have been taking them yes but not GNC’s. I opt for the Bio-Life Salmon Oil instead… I don’t know if its good or otherwise but the main reason I started taking it was for its benefit concerning heart/cardiovascular function.
May I sudgest you write something about metabolism in relation to people over 50yo.. Thanks

hi there, thanks for the informational post. I have been hearing about the benefits of fish oil. however, recently I came across articles that suggest krill oil as a better supplement for weight loss. what’s your opinion in this? where can I get good krill oils supplements in Malaysia?

Yes, KRILL is also great – and I believe the effective dose would be less. However, the price would be higher for krill oil, and I have not come across any stores that sell it here in Malaysia.
